I am new to the Corvair scene, but just picked up a 61 Coupe for my wife to run around with as a summer car. The car appears to be in great shape regarding the body and drive line. It took me some time to get it running. Rebuilt both carburetors, plugs, points, condenser, fuel filters, vacuum line and so on. She came to life and only has a few minor issues to be ironed out. A bit hesitant early on in the throttle, has a tiny surge when running and diesels when shut off. I'm presently trying to identify the root causes. All in all I think it's a great acquisition and more importantly, my wife loves it. I look forward to picking your collective brains for information. I've lurked for a couple of weeks and appears to be a great site with a lot to offer.

A vacuum leak might be the cause of the symptoms you describe. This chart might help to check for any problems in that area...
Reading the spark plugs might help to reveal the problem, if one bank of cylinders appears to be running lean compared to the other side. If your car has an automatic transmission, the vacuum modulator on the transmission can be a source of a vacuum leak — either with the line running to it or with a ruptured internal diaphragm. Check for signs of transmission fluid in the vacuum hose where it connects to the transmission. If you see oil in the hose, a ruptured diaphragm is likely and the vacuum modulator would need to be replaced.

I was just up in New Hampshire earlier this month on the way to Nova Scotia. Especially liked driving the Auto Road at Mount Washington. What a road and what a view once you get to the top.
I would love to drive the vair to the top some day.

Welcome to the Forum. You might want to make sure you are running Super Unleaded gas in the car and not regular unleaded. I know mine dieseled when I started out with regular and ran a little sluggish but once I put Super in it it smoothed right out.
