Help with 61 sedan parking brake cable
Help with 61 sedan parking brake cable
I am replacing the brakes on my son's 61 900 Monza and the forward parking brake cable came undone. After I finally found where it had sucked up inside, I found that the end was frayed. I can't figure out how to hook it up to the adjuster rod. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Help with 61 sedan parking brake cable
The parking brake cable on your son's 1961 Corvair sedan is a factory component assembly and needs to be replaced, not reattached. It has broken once, and even if there was a way to reconnect it, a weak, fatigued parking brake cable is not something you would want to reuse. You did not mention the transmission type on your Corvair, but if it is a Powerglide automatic a sound parking brake system is even more critical, because a Corvair automatic transmisasion does not have a PARK position to use the transmission to secure the car when parked. It depends totally on the parking brake system to keep the car secured and to prevent it from rolling away! The rear parking brake cable between the two rear wheels should also be carefully examined for signs of wear and deterioration, and if it appears to be aging it might be a good idea to replace it too. (Is it 53 years old?)

I have reviewed all five of your posts, and there is little detail describing your 1961 Corvair. I was looking for the transmission type but it is never mentioned. I was also looking for your location to possibly recommend a nearby club chapter of CORSA (Corvair Society of America), but your location is also not mentioned. If there is a CORSA chapter near you, it might be useful for you and your son to consider attending some meetings and social get-togethers together to meet other like-minded Corvair owners. The Corvair Forum is great, but it is not a substitute for face-to-face contact with other Corvair owners and hobbiests. These social gatherings are a great way to enjoy Corvair ownership and to learn more about these cars.
I would like to encourage you to expand on your initial posts and tell us more about yourself, your Corvair, and your goals for your Corvair. If you can describe your personal assessment of your mechanical skills and abilities, that would help a lot. Members of the Corvair Forum love to be helpful in assisting other Corvair owners with technical support and advice, but it helps a lot if we have some understanding of your technical background and mechanical abilities, Corvair-related knowledge, etc. Helping us to know more about you and your Corvair will help us to write comments to you that are tailored to your needs and experience. Pictures are great too, because pictures of your Corvair will help us to visualize where you are with your Corvair and its condition at the present time. Knowing your location is also useful, because knowing where you live can sometimes suggest possibilities to resolve some issues or problems.

Re: Help with 61 sedan parking brake cable
That's what I was afraid of. Thanks for the info.
Re: Help with 61 sedan parking brake cable
Update. I got the new cables in and installed. New Problem: the front cable seems to be a little too long. The adjuster is underneath the return spring. Is there anyway to adjust this, or did I do something wrong?
Re: Help with 61 sedan parking brake cable
Check along the whole cable to make sure it didn't slip off a pulley.

Re: Help with 61 sedan parking brake cable
Well, I have to come out and admit my stupidity. I started checking the cable and discovered that I had missed a pulley under the dash. Felt like a complete moron. It is now properly installed and works great. A big thanks to all for tolerating those of us who are mechanically challenged.

Re: Help with 61 sedan parking brake cable
Well don't feel to bad, i've been watching the forum because i've had carb problems & some of the other guys have the same symptoms as I had. Well I took the carbs apart 3 times last week & after the first time I started the car & it barley ran so I shut it off & wondered what I had done. I walked back to the table where I did the carbs & there laid the 2 pump discharge needles that go in next to the accelerator pumps.
We're never to old to learn but at 70 i'm old enough to forget!!!!!
