Introduction, Atlanta Owners?

Post by byroninatlanta »

Hello all...I am Byron in Atlanta; Fayetteville actually, just south of Atlanta. Here are some pics of my 63 Convertible. I bought it last fall with an old purple color change that had seen better days. I decided to take it back to the original red. Got it out of the paint shop in November. Did the interior over the winter. Now I need to install the convertible top and am recruiting help! Are there any Atlanta boarders who have done a top install? Any who want to give it a go? Any who want to see me fail miserably so they may learn from my mistakes? I can provide beer as compensation if anyone would like to volunteer!

Hello and welcome Byron. I'm not too far from you in Macon. Welcome to the forum. If you want to join, there is a club in Atlanta that is strictly corvairs. They could help you with questions or things you may need. Their link is corvairatlanta.org

Thanks Allen...I tried to log on to the Corvair Atlanta website, but it keeps rejecting me. Sending a note to Admin now.

I am the secretary of Corvair Atlanta. I am sorry the site is being unfriendly, but, honestly no one really uses or monitors it. You can contact me for more info if you like . PM me here.

I am in Snellville and have been working on Corvairs professionally for over 25 years. I have installed a couple of tops and I strongly recommend having a good top shop do the top for you with the top they recommend and normally install. I highly recommend Gary's Auto Interiors in McDonough http://garysautointeriors.com/. They have done a number of tops for myself and my customers as well as excellent upholstery work. The tops I installed were OK but not great. They likely experienced early wear due to too much or too little tension in spots in the installation. The task is involved enough that to me it is worth paying some dollars to someone that knows all the little tricks for a superior install.
Corvair guy since 1982. I have personally restored at least 20 Vairs, many of them restored ground up.
Currently working full time repairing Corvairs and restoring old cars.

Thanks tt...I had seen you on Facebook before and was a follower already! I am making plans to come to the gathering in Helen. I called Gary and he seems really nice. My problem is that I am between jobs and have more time than money. You need some help around the shop? I'm really good with a broom!

LOL I am pretty much a one man show in my little 2 bay shop. You can very possibly get an acceptable result but it is not an easy task, take your time and pay very close attention to how the top you are removing is installed so you can duplicate it when installing the new top (of course assumes that the last install was good). Where is it stapled, what is its spacing for and aft and side to side. Be sure to replace any damaged pads or tack strips along the way. A small measurement or alignment error could cause a poorly working or ruined top.
