Stolen Corvairs in L.A. Calif. - suspect arrested

Post by 66vairguy »

South Coast Corsa in L.A., Calif. put out a newsletter about a members stolen 69 Corvair.

Original newsletter article at http://www.corvair.org/chapters/southco ... /feb14.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I recently talked to a club member who said the police arrested a suspect (he's out on bail) in the recent Corvair theft. The suspect listed 1969 Corvair parts on Ebay and Craigslist and an observant Corvair club member notified the police. They went to the "sellers" house and found a number of cut-up cars, including parts of the 69 Corvair (sad), Nissans, Toyotas, etc.

A few Corvair engines were also found at the suspects house. Sorry I don't have any additional details. Specifics will be available in the next SCC newsletter in a week or so.

That's great news. Too bad the '69 was chopped.

Was that the 69 with 5000 or so original miles on it?

Yes Dave, sadly it was. It will never be original again. The latest story is that many parts are gone already.

Anybody buy parts for a 69 from a guy in L.A. Ca. lately?

I can't believe they released him on bail.
I guess we tend to value our Corvairs more highly than law enforcement...
I wonder if the other stolen SoCal Corvairs from a few years ago were part of his butchery?
I seem to remember a yellow '64?

I was talking to someone about auto theft and it turns out it's a fairly profitable crime.

First - You are only charged with stealing a car if you are "caught" stealing the car.

Second - If you are caught chopping up a stolen car you are charged with "In possession of stolen property" NOT car theft!

The more items found at the "suspects" place that are identified as stolen the more serious the charges. It's a monetary thing. The L.A. , Ca. guys are putting out the word to try and see if other folks can identify the two other Corvair engines found at the "suspects" house.

Looks like I'll be putting LoJack in my Corvair!

I say it was an inside job.

Any evidence of that?

Phil - Inside job!! I'm not sure who you are pointing the finger at, but the Corvair owner and the shop the car was at are in the clear! I suspect the owner of the car stolen would be offended by your comment.
Never cool to make such a comment without the facts.

SCC will post as many details in their newsletter as is possible. The "suspect" is known to "visit" the Corvair repair/parts shops in L.A. although he was not in any of the local clubs.

Reread my post...no finger pointing.

And I ask IF there is any evidence.

How can one have facts IF they don't ask.

I flat guarantee that is the very first angle the police investigated.

Sorry Phil, but your wording did sound like you were making an accusation (even if you didn't mean to) and then asked for evidence to back it up.

Anyway, it's all just guessing on our part folks. Obviously the police know to check all employees and owners when an unusual car is stolen from a shop, especially one with what I'm sure they consider of low appeal in the resale market. Could just be a thief who saw it there and knows old cars are easy to steal and have parts that are not easy to trace.

Phil said "Are you butt hurt at them?"

Sounds like a childish comment by a jerk.

The guy who cut it up may or may not be the guy who stole it. Either way, if the chop shop jerk was arrested there should be a mug shot. It would be nice if the picture could be spread far and wide among the Corvair family so we can keep an eye out for the freak should he be snoopin' around again. Additional details like name etc. would be helpful too, being aware and keeping in mind that he is an "alleged" creep until actually convicted. Don't know about CA but here in AZ, I think mug shots are public access and often posted online. The locals need to stay on this and see where it leads no matter where that might be. Keep us up to date if you can (link to your next newsletter?). I, for one, would like to see how this pans out. Sad thing to read about, anyway. Good luck on ID'ing the engines that were found. Take care.
