Stock spare tire rim size question:
Stock spare tire rim size question:
I just took off all the old rotting 4 ply poly tires off of the rims that were on my 65 Corsa. I noticed that the spare rim was much narrower than the 4 others. See pic. Is this a stock configuration or did someone slip a non standard spare in while nobody was looking? The car was 99% stock when I drug it home....so I was just wondering. I am going to refurbish the rims so I would like to know. Thanks. ![chevy :chevy:](./images/smilies/chevybowtie.gif)

Re: Stock spare tire rim size question:
I have never seen a narrower spare rim in a Vair (stock non space-saver that is...some have put later space savers in there). Standard spare is a regular rim with a full size tire.
Corvair guy since 1982. I have personally restored at least 20 Vairs, many of them restored ground up.

Re: Stock spare tire rim size question:
how wide are the 4 wheels you pulled off the car? they look alot wider than a stock 5.5".

Re: Stock spare tire rim size question:
Hello Scott. It is an optical illusion, they are 5.5" rims. The spare is a 4.0" rim. I thought the same thing when I first looked at the picture.
Thanks Ted. I also have not seen (but must admit I never looked all that close) a thinner rim for a spare on a Corvair. I thought I would include another pic to show that the rims are for sure related at least (GM) as the construction is identical except for the width.![think ](./images/smilies/think.gif)

Re: Stock spare tire rim size question:
I think some one swapped in a narrower rim for some reason on the spare (mixed spares up perhaps or had a flat spare and that one replaced it?).

Re: Stock spare tire rim size question:
Possibly a chevy II 5 bolt .
Re: Stock spare tire rim size question:
I think your right Ted. I was also thinking Chevy II as well "-hotrod". Thanks for the input. I will ask around a bit more and If I hear anything different I will post it. For now, it's a swapped out Chevy II rim as far as I'm concerned....
The more I think about it, I kinda like it anyway. The thin rim weighs in at 3.2 lbs. lighter than the stocker. It looks stock and any weight reduction rear of the transaxle can't hurt.

Re: Stock spare tire rim size question:
I usually do as well Ted. This time I am looking at a stock like restoration. Not sure I have the discipline to pull it off however! I can't help lean toward some sort of improvement or mod.
Wish me luck, eh!!! ![cool ](./images/smilies/glasses2.gif)
