New Corvair

I recently bought a 1965 110 for my fifteen year old son. It is a sharp car with lots of upgrades from the previous owner; including disk brakes and a 140 engine. Mechanically, it seems to be in excellent condition. It needs paint, but I don't see any rust or evidence of major damage. We spent this afternoon working on the car together. My son will learn alot about using tools, how to paint, and how to drive a stick-shift. I think it will be a good experience for us both.

That is an impressive looking Corvair and a great picture! My father took a similar approach with me when I was 16 (in 1969), but I only got a 1963 Corvair 500 with a sick Powerglide automatic and a frozen engine! But his primary goal was similar to yours -- to give his son experience with tools and to teach me to work on cars, and to build my self-confidence. I spent my summer vacation learning to pull the transaxle and to overhaul the engine and transmission, with only a Corvair shop manual to guide me (Lockheed transferred my father from northern to southern California, so he could not be present during that period to help me). But I did learn a lot that summer in our garage, and his goals were accomplished. The lessons I learned have served to guide me for a lifetime!

Thanks Brad. We live just north of Atlanta. My Dad helped me buy my first car, a 1956 BelAir, when I was 15. We were more tractor people than car people, but Dad helped me with lots of tools and a place to store the car when I left home. Not much has changed in 33 years - he still helps buy tools and the car is currently in his barn. I had to move it down to his place to make room for our new Corvair in my shop. I don't expect my son to get as involved in cars as I was, but I do want him to learn the tools. At 15, he is the only one of his friends with any woodworking skills. He is quite good at that actually.

My Dad just retired from Lockheed after a long career. They wanted him to transfer to CA years ago, but he refused to move. As it turned out, there was plenty of work for him to do here.
