Colorado EM Sedan

Post by Mountain Pilot »

Anyone in the Colorado area know of this '63 Sedan?

85K miles - Much recent work done on it - He has all the door panels and removed parts, still in work - was getting it ready for re-paint.

I am looking at purchasing it? Need a little feedback...

Don't know it but it looks pretty nice if the price is right for the work that needs to be completed.

The owner is an older guy that has had Corvairs most of his life, he moved and does not have room for it anymore. Very sound car with very very minor rust.

The 10 yr old repaint has its clear coat peeling off on the top surfaces. Interior original and in good condition.. Notice No Radio or antenna, was purchased that way.

Tranny shift cable oil leak - Push rod seals leaking - No evidence of any major engine work. Have a friend going over to look at it tonight, it is 200 miles from me so I cannot just jump over and see it...

Sounds like a history similar to the "little old lady from Pasadena". ::-): The owner has had a long-term and positive relationship with Corvairs, but factors like a move and possibly advancing age and health issues make it necessary to downsize and fade out his involvement with Corvairs. A good, positive ownership history with a valid reason for selling it that does not point to serious problems with the Corvair. The aging paint (without rust), and a few leaky seals are simple neglect that he possiby has let slip by because he can't do it himself, or doesn't want the expense anymore. It all sounds very promising for the next owner (YOU?)

My current Corsa had a similar history, with maintenance records and documents to back it up, from the previous owner in Virginia who had had it and who took good care of it for decades. He moved and was simply "aging out" of Corvair ownership. And it was not sitting in a garage or field for 30 years either. It was in use and well maintained until he sold it to a classic car dealer in Florida, and I picked it up.

Good luck with your quest! :tu:

This gentleman purchased it from a storage facility auction so he has no history on it other than the plates expired on it about 12 years ago and had been in the storage facility for about 7 years.

He has been very honest about it's condition and history. As a longtime Corvair owner I have spare pushrod seals in the parts cabinet and will take a relax weekend day to replace them. Shift Cable will not take long to reseal.

I do find it strange that it never had a radio or antenna. If I get it will Leave it that way. At least for now.

I guess I made a few assumptions about the current owner that were inacurate. But it still sounds like potentially a good deal with a promising and explainable history.

No radio? I still cannot believe that Chevrolet offered the Corvair without a heater! :whoa: Why would anyone order the car, omitting the heater! No heat, no defrost, and a major pain and expense to add it later! Sometimes the options list offered by the new car salesman in the 1960s could become real strange.

The Japanese manufacturers seemed to change the Detroit marketing methods when they entered the car market, offering Toyotas, Hondas and Datsuns that were fully equipped with a ton of convenience features STANDARD! There were a few options, but most things came standard with the car. Buyers seemed to like that, and Detroit changed accordingly. But a no radio option in a 1960s car... I guess it wasn't all that unusual. Some Corvairs did not come with rear side windows that rolled down either, and others came with rubber mats instead of carpet. Or metal covers instead of backup lights. Those chintzy bastards! UGH!
