Corvair specific car hauling trailer
For anyone that does a lot of hauling of Corvairs whats your favorite trailer look like? I'm planning on building a trailer this spring to haul around Corvairs only I know I can use any car trailer but I'd like to build one JUST for Corvairs without any extra length, weight etc.Have plans ever been posted somewhere for a trailer like this ?

Any ole car trailer will work, no modifications needed.

Go to your friendly local U-Haul. Take your tape measure, note book and a pencil.. I have rented three car trailers from them to move Corvairs from state to state. They were some of the nicest trailer I have ever pulled.. I'am sure they would let you copy the design since your going to build your own.. Good luck and post some build pictures..

Re: Corvair specific car hauling trailer
Yeah - most any trailer will work but the Corvair sits pretty low to the ground so long ramps are helpful. A removable or swing away fender can be an asset too.
I've used a few borrowed trailers for cross country trips. One was pretty heavy and high which made loading a hassle. It was a farm trailer and not really a car hauler.
The one I used in 08 worked really well but I think the axles were a little too far back which made for a bunch of tongue weight. It was an 18 footer

I have a 16' open trailer that is 112" to the center spring perch in between the axles and the rear tires of the corvair sit just behind the fenders on the trailer and it works perfect . I have used it for 15 years now.

Re: Corvair specific car hauling trailer
I would agree with Vaporlok, the U-haul car transport is very easy to load, is lightweight and it handles extremely well behind the different tow vehicles I have used in the past. I've done a few long distance tows with both the U-haul and borrowed trailers- no contest, use a U-haul. Actually for the price to rent one it's hard to justify building your own. I've tried tow dollies too and I have a homemade one of my own. It's okay for a short distance but very unstable at highway speeds. I no longer have a tow vehicle of my own and must borrow one or enlist someone with a heavy enough rig to help me out.
The dream rig in my head would be 50's or early 60's Chevy or GMC cab-over flat bed converted to a rollback with a late modern fuel injected GM drive train and rear axel for highway use. Old Skool style and new age technology. I recently saw just such a truck on the interstate (only it was a Ford), a real double take piece of eye candy!
Very Cool!

Unkl, youve got me drooling with your description of a car hauler. I love Cab overs, and my favorite truck is a late fortys/early fiftys Chevy/GMC. A modern flatbed tow truck with aluminum bed would be just awsome!

Re: Corvair specific car hauling trailer
I just checked U-haul prices for a trailer one way from Seattle to Cedar Rapids Iowa.
It said 55 bucks but that must be per day. That does sound cheap if the number is correct. I can make it in 3 days easily.
The expensive part is getting from Alaska to Seattle. That means boats and airplanes
I saw an old vintage resto-modded car hauler on one of the auctions recently. It was a tall Ford, about a 1948 I think.
Here's what you guys need. A modded 59 El Camino car hauler. It even uses Corvair headlight bezels.

Hey Unsafe the ultimate hauler for me would be a Corvair FC made something like this Mercedes race hauler or even better that FC military test unit you did the Utube on !Now if I just knew how that Articulated steering works !I guess I didn't make my self clear my son and I already own a nice 16 foot commercial trailer I'm just thinking I want one just for my Corvairs sharing a trailer can be a pain sometimes.Anyone close by got an FC cab for cheap ?Don't much care about anything behind the cab I'd have to build that anyway.UNSAFE wrote:I just checked U-haul prices for a trailer one way from Seattle to Cedar Rapids Iowa.

Re: Corvair specific car hauling trailer
here is mine, its about as short as you can go and still get the vair on. It has hauled other vehicles as well . Ipaid $800 for it , it had 4 brand new tires that were almost the cost of the trailer ( trailer tires are specail and not cheap for good ones) it needs the electric brakes hooked up and I have a weight distributing hitch. It tows nice , only bad thing is not being able to open the doors but that ius a trade off vs being low to the ground

Re: Corvair specific car hauling trailer
Do most of you guys tow your Corvairs with the front faceing the rear of the trailer? I will be trailering mine to Carlisle Pa for the all truck nationals this summer, Just wondering. I am thinking the Van should be backed onto the trailer so there is more tongue weight, instead of all the weight being at the rear of the trailer.

I always tow mine forward.
Re: Corvair specific car hauling trailer
Wow Michael - the race car sure looks sharp !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've towed my vair front first every time and I had more than enough tongue each time.
It sure is easier backing off a trailer than backing on to one
I'd guess with a van that aerodynamics aren't much of a factor .
Leon - you forgot to add the Mercedes car hauler photo. I've got a pic of it somewhere and I'll post it when I find it. It looked kinda like the 59 Chevy hauler I posted above.
Here's the article for vanman .
