Front turn signal lamp unit? Rear turn signal/brake lamp unit? Turn signal switch? The rear is pretty obvious. The fronts are access from the rear. Remove the trunk corner cover plates to access the brackets and nuts. The switch is accessed by pulling the steering wheel, removing a few screws, and often removing a snap ring hold the bearing unit to the column.

Here are the instructions from the 1965 Corvair Chassis Shop Manual (these basic procedures are applicable to all Late Model (1965-1969) Corvairs)...

The procedures for removing and replacing the turn signal assembly are on pages 12-13 through 12-14. This section of the factory shop manual is downloadable and can be viewed using Adobe Reader.

The procedure refers to Section 9 of the Chassis Shop Manual for instructions on how to remove and replace the steering wheel. The steering wheel removal procedure begins on page 9-3. Here is that section of the manual...

You will need a steering wheel puller tool to remove the steering wheel without damage. These tools can usually be rented or purchased locally at an auto parts store. Clark's Corvair Parts also sells this tool (Part No: C1119) for $11.80. It can be found on page TOOLS-7 of the online catalog...

Same thing happened to me when I let a child sit in the car so his mom could take a picture. First thing he did was grab the turn signal lever and break it off. Had to replace the whole plastic assembly inside. Not a quick fix.

Removed steering wheel, etc. Cannot get the switch out. Have pryed, tried pliers, etc. Do not want to ruin the bearing. What's the trick?

Look for a well hidden snap ring like in the photo. It is just above the bearing but not obvious. Sometimes you can push the steering wheel inward a fraction to get at it with an ice pick or tiny screwdriver.

Thanks for the extra help Brad. Here is what I recall my 65 looked like inside when it was time to pull it apart. Pics borrowed from Google images. I've heard that this snap ring was not used until mid-65 model year production so keep it in mind that lots of little changes happen along the way.

Thanks for the great info, Dave. Even the manual doesn't mention the snap ring. You da man!

Just want to ask Dave from AZ when and how often does he drive his fleet of LM Corvairs. What's your favorite to drive?

Not very often the last few months but 5 of them are licensed and insured which is actually pretty cheap using Hagerty and classic registration. I drive them more on weekends but I try to take one to work each Friday if I can. 3 of them are in various states of either being restored or parted out. The V8 is the most fun because people don't expect to see a big block in the rear.
