SPU road race car build
OK guys some of you out there haven't seen my newest project. Here are some pics of my new Road race / autocross car. It will be running in SCCA club racing in the SPU class. Super Production Under 2.5 ltre. I know that the Corvair is a 2.7 ltre but there is a class rule that allows American produced air cooled engines up to 3.0 ltres. I built mine to 2998cc to fit within the rules.
The car came across the scales when finished at 1904lbs.
The car is currently awaiting the final items to be fully SCCA legal. It needs to be painted, and have a fire suspression system installed.

It's great to see before during and after pics of various builds. The during pics are the best, thanks for posting and keep those pics coming.

SM - OMG that is one fantastic looking ride. And the widened rear quarter panels were done to perfection. Wow that thing is going to be a major contender at that weight.
I've been around some pretty awesome and well constructed race cars in my earlier days, but that thing is just AWESOME. Talk about a shell of a car.
Well, good luck with the race season. I'd sure like to see that thing run one of these days.

Yeah - it'll be cool if we get to see Michael LeVeque and David go at it !
Here's David's old car in action !

Ok David, I'm really interested in the ignition. It looks like waste fire crank triggered. Are you using the distributor for anything?

Yes the engine is running a Crank trigger ignition system. I'm using an Electromotive unit. The main reason for the dist is to run the oil pump. I was going to make a custom plug with a bearing located in it to hold the shaft. This would make a nice clean appearance. But I decided to run a regular dist. I have a points plate that is already setup so If I have any problem at the track with the crank trigger system I have my back up ignition already installed.
I had to use the backup ignition at my very first event as my first install of the trigger wheel failed. I have since made a much nicer mount and I have had no additional problems.
I really like the Crank trigger unit as it cranks and fires the engine at 8deg of adv. Then once it fires and gets above 800 rpm it runs at the advance that I have set it to.

Like this?I was going to make a custom plug with a bearing located in it to hold the shaft.
I made it from some different sizes of pipe, welded together. It's constructed so that the outside pipe sits in the block, another pipe can rotate inside it, then the cut down dizzy shaft rides inside that. Kind of like a 3 layer steel cake, lol! Axial play is taken up in the normal way, using the stock endplay washer that simply butts up against the pipe.
Here's the article: http://www.capitalcitycorvairs.com/the- ... pe/7-d-i-s
People on Corvair Center don't like crank triggers, this place is much more receptive. hehe

Not ALL people on CC... I like them. Anything to make the timing more accurate is a good thing.
Re: SPU road race car build
I tried waste spark crank fired ignition but I had problems with defective parts including a faulty Hall sensor.
One thing about waste fire is the wild backfires you get when the EFI is malfunctioning .
I was using TWM throttle bodies with triple GM coils and SDS controls. I know it's a decent set-up but it didn't work for me. I planned on retrying it but have been very happy with current carbs and dizzy.
I was wearing out my motor trying to get it to run right and the carbs were just gonna be temporary.
Here's a few pics of what I had. I do still have one of Ray Sedman's billet Hall sensor mounts that I'd gladly sell for 30 bucks.
