New to site....just bought a Spyder!

Post by Outlaw »

Hey guys, just purchased a 63' Spyder and going to pick it up this week. Not my first Corvair, I fully restored a 66' Monza a few years back and miss it dearly after foolishly selling it. Heres a question for you all, hope you can help. Want to haul the car back home in my friends encloded Pace American trailer......18' long and 7'6" wide inside.......will i be able to get this car in ok and still be able to get out the window if I drive it inside?

Ok, got the Spyder home, so heres some pics.......interior is done, mechanically really good, runs and drives nice, all metal work done, just needs prep and paint and a few other small things. The car is originally Monaco Blue but has been painted a bright electric blue which i actually really like which brings me to the question whether to keep it original or have some fun with it. Having custom paint and body experience (and a booth) I can get a little crazy with the car. Maybe the bright blue color with satin black trim......anyone blacked out a 'Vair here?

Your car, so whatever happens, make it so you like it. But if you want a total stranger's opinion, Monaco Blue with a blue interior is probably about a 9.8 on the Awesome Scale.

I really like the electric blue cause it really "pops". However, the Monaco is more sophisticated. Hmmm either way you go it will be sweet. Also love the hugger orange if you want to break necks but that might be a bit exotic on an EM.

Is Monaco Blue a solid or metallic? I love the idea of going to a bright solid color for an EM. My only hesitiation is not being able to qualify for Collectors plates for the cheapo $130.00 per year insurance which brings me back to going original. Lots to think about.....

Electric blue with all the chrome is my vote. I'm not one to take off chrome or black it out. Its what makes old cars what they are, you don't see chrome on cars any more, besides maybe emblems.

Here's a little more info on Monaco Blue:

I don't know whether it's a metallic or not, but Clarks has paint chips and you could probably even call and just ask. It wouldn't take much to look at the chip.

Love your 1963 Spyder! I used to own a white 1963 Spyder convertible when I was a teenager back in 1970-1971. It was the 5th Corvair in our family: a 1961 Monza coupe (purchased NEW), 1965 Corsa convertible, 1962 Monza coupe, 1963 500 coupe (something of a parts car), and then the 1963 Spyder convertible -- a really great car, but I was a dumb teen and didn't know what I had so I didn't keep it!

 Anyway, welcome to the Forum! Your Spyder looks to be far ahead of a "fixer upper". It is really a clean example and truly worthy of a great paint job! Here are the specs of the original blue paint on your car:

914 - Monaco Blue Metallic
Lucite® Code - 4391L
Dulux® Code - 181-96000

Most of the basic 1963 Corvair specs can be found here:
http://www.oldride.com/library/1963_che ... rvair.html

I think your Spyder would look great in Nassau Blue too. I've seen Nassau Blue on a lot of early Corvettes and it looked GREAT.

F - Nassau Blue
Lucite® Code - 4690L
Dulux® Code - 181-97344

Please keep the pictures coming. We would love to see it as you progress!

I also am new to the Forum, and had been without a Corvair since I sold my 1965 Corsa convertible in the early 1990s. My wife and I, following our 40th anniversary, decided to get back in to Corvairs to try to recapture some of our memories. If you would like to read a little about us and our history with Corvairs, go to Introductions in the Corvair Forum and see: New from Lake Chatuge, North Carolina

I look forward to hearing more about your Spyder and your experiences with it. Below are a few of pictures of the 1966 Corsa we bought a few months ago. Since it is also blue it might provide you with some ideas for your 1963. I also included a couple of Blue paint samples for comparison.

Hey Brad, that Blue on your 66' looks incredible, especially with wheels, are those Buick Road wheels? Thanks for the paint codes, that helps. The Spyder is pretty much all done except for paint, trim and weatherstrip so I'll prep it over the winter as time allows and roll it into my booth in the spring. I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I'm sure the paint will come out nice. :tu:
