Replacing Carpet

Post by matthewdepace »

Hi- It Matt again from Long Island, NY

I am looking to change out the carpet. I saw this comes in a few different ways. I am wondering what everyone recommends for carpet replacement.

I saw this-

Cut and Sewn Carpet

OR Is it better to go with the molded carpet.

What does everyone recommend- any recommendations I would appreciate.

Thanks!

Hi Matt, for 164 bones I would order the Clarks one. I have used them twice now and love the fit. So that is my opinion, I have used generic carpets before, and you can get them to look nice but it just takes more work cutting and fitting.

I would agree with Crazy. Hard to go wrong with Clark's in my opinion.

I agree with Flat6 and Jon. I have ordered carpets from Stockinteriors.com and they make a great product, however I would catagorize their cut and sewn carpets as a "close fit". Clarks is spot on and as far as molded for corvairs go, their is really no need as their aren't a lot of places the carpet needs to be molded to fit around. I had Clarks carpet in my 64 and now in my 65 and it is the best place to buy any interior need for your Corvair IMO.

Thanks all for your comments- I appreciate that. When you replaced your carpet- did you glue it down?

Did you do any prep work to the floor boards? Mine are in good shape - but was curious.

In my 64 I had to replace the floor pans, unfortunately, and once I did I used POR-15 on the inside and underneath to protect them from rusting. I then used a foam padding about 1/2" thick just to give the carpet a little depth, and sprayed a light tack film that is commonly used to glue headliner fabric. I think it was made by 3M. The 65 I have now someone else installed Clarks carpet but they laid it right on the floor pans and I am in the process of pulling it up because there is a bit of prepping, sanding, and painting I need to do before the carpet goes back down. Also I think I might use the U-seal soundproofing that Scott mentioned in a thread a while back:

The thread said you could get it at Lowes or Home Depot so I will start there, as long as I can get more POR-15 which seems to be near impossible up here in AK.

If you put the u-seal tape down how the hell do you ever get it off if need to do any repairs in future?? Looks like it would be a mare to remove.... Anyone fitted it and pulled it up before?

I replaced the carpet in my 65 Monza that I had purchased from Clark's. Carpet was fine but I wish I would have spent the extra bucks and gone with the molded. It will save you a lot of time and some frustration. It is true the corvair floor does not have any big valleys or hills but the small ones are enough to give you extra work and carpent wrinkles. If you decide to go with the flat carpet make sure to have a heat gun handy. It definitely will help in molding the carpet as you lay it. Make sure you don't have any rust on the floor pans and the seams are sealed. It is a good idea since it is exposed to paint it or apply a good rust preventative. Something less to worry about in the future.

Just replaced my carpet last week and went with clarks, very easy to install couple of hours and it was done. I only had a little trouble with the accelerator pedal but with some patience worked it out. I didn't glue mine down I thought about it but decided to see what it looks like in a few weeks after it stretches out and then see if I need to glue it.

I did the Clark's non-molded about 2 years ago on my 65 vert. Wished I would've gotten the molded for a couple extra bucks. There probably would not have been any 'buckling' or high spots if I did. Still looks nice and is holding up well though.

Hi, I'm having issues with the Accelerator Pedal also. Anybody have pictures of the Accelerator Pedal install? I'm having problems figuring out where the carpet goes. The pedal goes thru the carpet, but what about the two tabs in the back that attach to the pedal to the linkage? I presume the carpet goes over the two tabs? Any hints would be appreciated. I'm attaching a couple of pics
Thanks

Ok, I have installed the carpet. Question about the rubber tab at the bottom of the accelerator pedal. Does it go on top of the carpet or does the carpet cover it? See the first pic above. It is the tab sticking out to the right.
Thanks
