How to get a land speed record

Post by Land Speed »

I was looking through the Bonneville rule book the other day, and i noticed that there is no record in the F/CPS class. The class is for 2-3L (122-188 cid) American made cars from 1948-1982 that came with a factory supercharger or turbocharger. The list of such cars seems to be pretty small, the 1957 Ford Thunderbird and sedan, the 1963 Buick and of course the 1966 Corvair. The Corvair is the only vehicle with an engine displacement under 3L. So if you have a 1966 (or could make your car look like a 1966) and have the time and money to put a turbo (or was it twins?) on it, build a roll cage, install a racing seat, fire suppression system and a few other things, then make 2 runs on the salt, you will have a record! The only problem you may have is if a competitor shows up with another Corvair.

Since the record is open, so long as you can make 2 passes (3 miles under power) whatever you run will become the record.

Good Luck!
