Modified Stickshift Bellhousing

Found this flying solo in the rafters of the main garage. It appears to have been modified in a number of places.

What specific setups could this have been built to complement?

I agree, but Oh! not for a Corvair differential, as the starter has been moved too. Maybe a VW transaxle?

Doubt it was for a VW transaxle. That would give two bellhousing spaces. Maybe had a plate for a "conventional" transmission? Add insult to modification with GIRLING hydraulics.

We may never know for sure, but between the clutch, starter and redrilled holes, maybe this could have been modified for a flipped transaxle

The ones I've seen for a flipped transaxle they had cut it in half, like inline with the flywheel. The 2 parts are then rotated 180 degrees from each other and welded back together.

Here's a flipped transaxle fastened to a "normal" location bellhousing. It's surprising how some of the bolts fit, and others are only offset a small amount.

A hydraulic clutch would be a good choice for this setup IMO

Part of the bellhousing at the starter was cut and sectioned in for the new starter location.

Mid engine buggy perhaps?

I remember seeing a shelf full of cut, flipped, and welded back together Corvair bellhousings at Hobart Kennedy's original Kennedy Engineered Products (KEP) shop when I was about 10 years old. He was buddies with my Dad.
