bad oil leak 63 monza
i changed l my oil filter and now i am getting a lot of oil leaking on top of the motor, the filter isn't leaking, i had about 2 quarts of oil on the floor and i only ran the motor about3 seconds, i can't figure out where it is coming from, i checked the pvc and it is clear, any idea where it might be coming from sure would be appreciated, i just don't know where to look

If its not leaking at the filter , the filter may be clogged forcing a leak elsewhere. Oil pressure switch is a known problem. Also possibly added too muck oil

Sorry. Try wiggling the filter to make sure it is tight. Then remove and check the gasket. There is one on the bolt, too.

thanks for the information, it isn't over filled with oil and it is a new filter from Clarks and it is tight, this is the second Corvair i have restored, i did a 66 with a 140 motor, i rebuilt the motor without any problems, i'll check the oil pressure switch, and maybe the new filter is bad i might need to replace it, i was told that it could be the pvc tube, i know something is plugged to make it spill out this much oil, the puzzling thing is it doesn't leak right away, it didn't leak after it was started, i went back a hour later and the oil was all over the floor
Re: bad oil leak 63 monza
That is a BIG oil leak. If it was fine before changing the filter --------- Just guessing, but I bet it is shooting oil past the filter gasket where you can't see it. Only other thought is -- did you put the plug back in the oil pan? No insult as I've done it

If you didn't already disgard it, look at the old filter. Are both rubber seals still on it? If so, you'll probably have to drop the newly installed filter and see what condition the gaskets are in. Have a new filter ready if needed. Sometimes you can get lucky and reinstall the new(ish) one once you find the sealing issue.

Yes, if the old filter's seal is still inside the oil filter adapter it will spew oil! Two flat rubber gaskets do not seal....

Re: bad oil leak 63 monza
Another potential place for a big leak under pressure is the oil cooler seals but it doesn't go to the top of the engine.
Oil pressure sender isn't usually a huge leak.
A big leak should be easy to locate if you've got more oil and some floor dry.

i drove this car into my garage without a oil leak, it all started when i changed the oil and installed a Wen oil filter, the gasket kept popping out and not sealing so i ordered a Clarks filter where the gasket is attached to the filter, the Wen filter gasket was loose on their filter and that is why it wouldn't stay in place, the Clark filter isn't leaking
Re: bad oil leak 63 monza
Frank may be correct. Monzadon Did you check to see if the old seal is stuck in the oil filter engine housing???Frank DuVal wrote: ↑Wed Apr 09, 2025 6:30 pm Yes, if the old filter's seal is still inside the oil filter adapter it will spew oil! Two flat rubber gaskets do not seal....![]()

I am having this exact same problem, down to adding Lucas. I changed the oil switch and oil filter those are not leaking now. It appears to be coming from here.

Nothing under the top shroud should have suddenly sprung a leak just because you did an oil change.
What you likely saw was oil bubbling from cooling air escaping along that area where the top shroud connects.
Did you check your oil filter to make sure that you don't have a double gasket situation?

I think this is the case. I let it run for a bit and the oil level didn't change. But it was seeping out of the top shroud. I think it's fixed it's just hard too tell because there is so much oil everywhere. The oil switch is not leaking. and the oil filter isn't leaking.American Mel wrote: ↑Fri Apr 11, 2025 5:10 pm Nothing under the top shroud should have suddenly sprung a leak just because you did an oil change.

I'm gonna take it for a rip around the neighborhood and see what's what.
