Fuel pump from O'Reilly's?
Got the 61 running in a decent manner until the fuel pump went and flooded my crank case and spewed fuel and oil everywhere!!!! Now time to change the oil and replace the fuel pump. Looks like Clark's no longer has any manual pump options. Amazon has a couple with very poor reviews. Has anyone tried the option from O'Reilly's? Should I just get the electric kit from Clark's? I appreciate any of y'all's thoughts.

Re: Fuel pump from O'Reilly's?
I used to buy fuel pumps from O'Reillys and replace the spring with one form an original AC because the new one put out too much pressure.
That was probably more than 6 years ago and I quit doing it when they went from $42 to $92.
I've been mainly switching to electric fuel pumps for the last 6 years or more.
I've never had a Clarks EFP kit so I can't say how it is. It may have the Made in China Airtex electric fuel pump. I've never tried one of those either.

Cnicol here has a new electric fuel pump kit that has just about everything you need. I HAVE NOT tried Craig's kit, but many have and so far all positive comments.

Re: Fuel pump from O'Reilly's?
I'll advocate for the in-tank electric pump with the "fake" center block (bypass) installed in the mechanical pump housing. This keeps all plumbing original looking and configuration. There are ready to use safety systems available that will shut the pump off in event of an accident

X2 on the intank pump from Corvair EFI. Less noise from it than an external pump.
Here are 2 ways to wire up the in-tank pump.

I had one minor hiccup and his customer service was everything you could ask for
I’d highly recommend his electric pump kit.
Re: Fuel pump from O'Reilly's?
I have installed several of Craig's Racersrods.com pumps in both earlies and lates and they are as plug-n-play as you will ever find. You will not notice the pump noise (engine off) unless you really pay attention. When the engine is running, you absolutely will not hear the pump at all. For more safety and convenience, I opted to add the LOP relay on both installs which automatically gives you a 10-second fuel pump prime before starting the engine plus the safety of a low oil pressure disconnect feature. The pump comes with an inertia switch to disconnect the power in the event of a crash.66vairguy wrote: ↑Sun Apr 06, 2025 7:05 pm Cnicol here has a new electric fuel pump kit that has just about everything you need. Re: Fuel pump from O'Reilly's?
To avoid confusion, Cnicol pump kit is not the same as the kit from Corvair EFI. Cnicol kits have an external pump, the other kit is an internal pump. The above posts are referencing the Cnicol external pump kits, not the other, internal pump kit.Lane66Monza wrote: ↑Mon Apr 07, 2025 4:00 am X2 on the intank pump from Corvair EFI. The confusion may arise as Cnicol does offer the other, internal pump kit, in addition to his offerings.
Both kits are fairly quiet and I would give the edge to the Cnicol kit as the pump seems to be better isolated from transmitted sound due to the generous foam mounting sleeve.

Re: Fuel pump from O'Reilly's?
Craig is offering the Ted Brown (Corvair EFI) a bundle of the Corvair EFI in-tank pump for carb engines with his plug and play electrical control system.
Check out the link on what he says about his offering.

"Racers fuel pump line now offering FC and Ted Brown In-Tank models
Well this is a fun announcement! Two additional fuel pump designs in my quest to become "all things in Corvair fuel pumps"
New is a kit for Corvair 95 FC trucks. Like my other kits for car models, this FC kit is all-inclusive and Plug-n-Play.
Also new: I now stock Ted Brown In-Tank fuel pump kits bundled with my control system, Plug-n-Play harness, and complete illustrated instructions. This is a great alternative for AC and Gas Heater cars and terrific value if you happen to need a new fuel sending unit."
He has several kits, to include bundling the Corvair EFI in-tank kit with his system.
So here are all the options. Owners can pick what they want in regards to pumps,
EXTERNAL -
1. Racer's Edge pump with the supplied control system.
2. Buy your own external pump and do a "do it yourself" wiring install. There are several links in the forum to help out this project.
INTERNAL -
1. Racers Corvair EFI (Ted Browns design). Bundled with Racers Edge control system.
2. Buy the pump direct from Ted Brown at Corvair EFI and do a "do it yourself" wiring install. There are couple links in the forum to help out this project.
Cost on your budget may be the only difference. But control system on a "do it yourself" system is your design of what is important to you.
You do need to know all the options. I have 2 links with parts lists for those wanting to do a "do it yourself" control system. It also describes the reasons for the design of the control system. You can add or subtract any thing you want to do with the system.
So in addition to the links I previous listed, here are the 2 additional inks for added info to make your decision.
ps: Craig helped me with these diagrams back 9 years ago, so I could be sure they were correct electrically. He was the final checker of the diagrams I created for the LM, due to his very high level of electrical knowledge. They only changed from then, when I added a 3 position prime switch.

Re: Fuel pump from O'Reilly's?
Something you need to be aware of if you don't already know the difference.
The 1960 and early 1961 (First Design) Corvair Fuel Pump has a longer length rod coming out of the bottom of it (Longer than the 2nd Design) and the shaft between the pump and crankshaft needs to match those pumps.
The Late 1961 through 1969 (2nd Design) Corvair Fuel Pump has a shorter length rod coming out of the bottom of it (Shorter than the 1st Design) and the shaft between the pump and crankshaft needs to match those pumps.
Many of the currently available Aftermarket Fuel Pumps are being advertised to work in ALL 1960 through 1969 engines which is incorrect unless changes are made to the pump or internal parts in the vehicle.
Many of these pumps currently manufactured pumps have the longer rod coming out of the bottom of the pump that should work acceptably for the vehicles using the 1st design shaft between the pump and crankshaft but, will likely fail quickly when installed in vehicles with the 2nd design shaft between the pump and crankshaft.
As I understand it, the 1st and 2nd design pump rods can be swapped out to work with the corresponding fuel pump.
Some individuals have taken the time and shortened the length of the longer fuel pump rod to match the shorter rod needed for vehicles using the 2nd design shaft between the fuel pump and crankshaft.
Another issue I noticed on the US Motor Works branded pumps is that the locating hole in the fuel pump shaft is not there. Some individuals might be inclined to drill the locating hole but getting everything correct could potentially be difficult. Others have mentioned swapping parts from their original pump in order to have a properly located locating hole to install the pump.
Even if the end user gets the correct combination of rod and shaft lengths, the durability of these currently available aftermarket pumps may not be all that good. It seems that they may not work well with today's Ethanol infected fuels but that is simply my opinion....
I personally have experienced very short durability with the recently manufactured mechanical fuel pumps. Several I installed lasted less than 500 miles before failing, and one went a bit over 3,000 miles before it failed.
As much as I resisted the idea of switching over to an electric fuel pump, I finally began to consider it and then Clark's started making an effort to have pumps made so I procrastinated.
After a several year delay in getting the Clark's pumps to market, I have been acquiring NOS OE and NOS Rebuilt pumps when they became available and have had varying success with them.
At this time all of my Corvair air cooled vehicles still have mechanical pumps but that is about to change. When Craig N. (AKA cnicol) introduced his Electric Fuel Pump Kit, I purchased one for my '65 Monza convertible but have not yet installed it. Hopefully this season it will get installed. I am also planning on converting my others air cooled Corvair's to electric pumps as I am through waiting for a good reliable alternative to be available.

When all is said and done, what works best for the individual and their vehicle is the way to go....

Re: Fuel pump from O'Reilly's?
I bought one of the Clarks kits back in 2009. I finally took the kit apart and used what parts I wanted in my car. Parts are still waiting to be put in. I do have one of the last good Air Tex E8016S Pump from that era. Now they are chinese made and very poor reliability. There are some good reliable external pumps people have been using for years. You can ask for inputs and get a list of good external pumps. I have cheap $13 pumps from ebay on my 66 Monza More Door. 2 replacements in 5 years. Still have 2 more cheap ones to use up or give them to buyer of my car. They are plug and play pumps with connectors to make replacements fast, when a pump goes bad.
I have a Corvair EFI in-tank pump at the garage waiting for the tank to be installed on my 66 Monza Coupe. I will be using my control system design. I like the impact switch for pump turnoff after a collision. I also like the pump shutting off when engine looses oil pressure. It may shutoff faster when a loss of oil pressure occurs. A loss of rpm signal is nice, if you lose the distributor control signal. But how much does loss of tach signal, i.e., loss of distributor power really happen. About the same as lose of power from alternator & battery at the same time. If you lose the tach signal, then the engine is slowing and low oil pressure light comes on. Relay de-energized and pump shuts off.
The decision of which pump is yours, along what way to control it. You will get help here, whatever options you decide on.

From their What's New Page. Not anything new this month that I know of.
Clark Repro Fuel Pump
Initial testing is complete and pumps are being produced! Expected in stock Spring 2025.

I am staying with electric pumps. My Vairs are not original from production line, so I will improve them.
I will decide what is best for me and the Vair, in regards to reliability and safety..
