Central Coast Corsa Lakewood Garage Squad Project

Post by Phil Dally »

One of our newer chapter members owns a 1961 Lakewood that needed a bit of work to be roadworthy. So we (I) decided to do a Garage Squad weekend or two to get it back on the road. All the work was done at Bob W's (no need for last names) super nice and clean shop. The main players were Bob, Jim P, Vince P, Mike T, myself, and the owner Susan S.

First picture is when we picked it up last June at Susan's place in Lompoc. The picture on the trailer is my place. It got stored here until the weather cooled off in North San Luis Obispo County. While waiting at my place the PG cable really started leaking and was added to the list. Bottom got pressure washed before I took it over to Bob's.

4 New Maxxis Tires
4 New Clark's Shocks
Full Brake Inspection
PG Cable Rescue Taped
New PG Cable Grommets
Engine T-stat Replacement
Filler Neck hoses Upgraded
New License Plate Lights
Reverse Lights Diagnosed
New (used) Shifter Knob
New engine Access Latch
Fluids Checked topped Off
More that I can't Remember
We Put Eyes On Everything

It took two weekend days for all of us Corvair "Experts" to get everything done and the car driven by Susan back to my place. After the fact Mike T found an NOS reverse light brass contact which is needed. To be continued in the Fall somewhere in South County. Susan's first time out will be the club meeting on Saturday February 22nd. Last picture is going home to Lompoc from my place.

Thank you to all involved!! It was our pleasure to be of service and put another Corvair back on the road!!

Nice to see another lakewood getting put back on the road. I hope to have mine finished in time to drive down to the convention. It's getting close!

I love that sort of stuff and tried to get something going here but it didn't go very far.
It didn't help that I didn't want to work on Corvairs for free on my day off from working on Corvairs. It also didn't help that the only guys willing to do it were getting old.
That's a good thing you're doing for the Corvair and also the team.

That's a nice looking Lakewood. It needs some wheel covers. I have a set of '62 full wheel covers that I would donate to this gal. call me if interested. Doug Ward Orange, Ca., 714-six two four-9044

Thank you all for pitching in and helping Susan with her Lakewood.
I know that wagon vary well as I being her former brother in law. We painted it in the Burpee Seed
shop, that I ran about 40 years ago!!! How time fly's!! So yes, Susan has a lot of history with that
wagon. It was her first car! When they saw a Lakewood at the 1976 Central Coast Corsa Mini Convention
in Santa Maria... she said she would get a drivers licence if my Brother would get her a Corvair wagon.
We first saw this one that she now has, up on top of the dunes in Guadalupe. How in the heck did they
drive it up there???
Thanks so much again for all you have done helping Susan. She truly loves her Lakewood.
