Re: Who are the Military Veterans on our Forum
I am not but both my kids are as well as my daughter's husband. I was signed up to go into the Airforce but got in a motorcycle accident a few weeks before and was rejected due to a broken back and neck injuries. My son was a Rescue swimmer in the Navy for 10 years and stationed in the Persian Gulf for 8 of those 10 years. He also was a wildland fire fighter when he got out, Kern county Helicopter search and rescue, and now a city of Bakersfield fireman and paramedic. My daughter was in the Army and was in Afghanistan where she met her husband and Korea. She is now a school teacher in Florida, proud of both my Kids.

Re: Who are the Military Veterans on our Forum
I'm not a veteran but my Dad was. He was too young to fight in WWII so the Navy sent him to the shipyards in Alaska and he became a welder. When he was old enough to go the war was winding down but he volunteered anyway. The only action he saw was the naval support of Operation Beleaguer which was in support of Chiang Kia-Shek.
The truly dangerous event in my Dad's Navy career was during a Pacific Super Typhoon. He was on a floating drydock that was under tow from Guam to Pearl Harbor in 90 foot seas. The cable broke and they were adrift in those conditions for an extended period of time. They tied themselves down to their bunks and rode it out.
When my Dad passed in 2012 a Bugler played Taps at his service. Thank you to all who served for your service!!

Re: Who are the Military Veterans on our Forum
On this Veterans Day I wanted to pay tribute to my late father-in-law, J. Ned Corman, who fought in WWII along with Gregory "Pappy" Boyington in the United States Marine Corps, flying the F4U Corsair fighter with the Marine fighter squadron VMF-214 ("Black Sheep") in the war in the Pacific. After WWII he flew many different commercial aircraft, including the Boeing 747, for several decades as a commercial airline pilot with Pan Am.

My late father, Warren M. Bodie, served as a bomber mechanic with the Army Air Corps in Texas at the "Rattlesnake Bomber Base" in Pyote, Texas. After the war he worked for Lockheed as a military and commercial aircraft and U.S. Navy missile systems engineer. He was also a military aviation historian, writing many magazine articles and authoring several books covering many WWII military aircraft.

In honor of Veterans Day (November 11)...Meet "TUFI" (Truck Utility Floatable Independent), a Corvair based amphibious military vehicle that Chevrolet Engineering created in 1963. Although the army never requested a vehicle like this to be made, they did test it for GM that same year.
This forward control, mid-engine truck was equipped with a Corvair air-cooled 2.7 liter (75hp) engine with the ability to go 60mph on land and 2.5mph in the water while carrying eight passengers. Interestingly at that time, the civilian Corvairs were equipped with 95hp engines for the 1964 model year and earlier model years that had a smaller 2.4 liter engine (80hp). The engine was driving all four wheels via a two-speed transaxle/transfer case, and both ends had DM Posi limited-slip differentials.
The suspension was the same as the Corvair FC trucks, and it also had additional driveshafts for the front wheels. The chassis was aluminum, but the body was made from a material called Royalite, a strong thermoplastic (which was a lighter alternative to fiberglass). This boat-like vehicle had no propellers, however, the big tread tires were used as paddle wheels, and the half skirts assisted the wheels in pushing the water. Pretty clever.
Although the army wasn’t interested in the TUFI, this would have been so cool had GM made this as a civilian car-boat! It definitely was another "ahead of its time" vehicle that GM created. Move over Amphicar...here comes the TUFI! I know I would have bought one (or two). Makes me wonder if the Corvair song "Tough Little Buggy" which came out in 1964 was about TUFI. Nahhh, all Corvairs were tough little buggies. That's why I love them so much.
We do not know the current whereabouts of TUFI, but for more details about this unique military vehicle, click on the article link below:

Happy Veterans Day as we celebrate those who served in the military (in wartime or peace). Your contributions to secure our national security are greatly appreciated! God bless!

Me, son Andy, and Dad on Ex- USS TORSK (AGSS-423) Memorial Day 2007. Torsk is the museum sub in Baltimore Harbor since 1973. Andy played taps for the Memorial Service that day.
Oldest and most experienced Chief, he was made COB (Chief of the boat or more informally COB of the MOB!) of the Volunteer Group and nicknamed Geezer Chief. He loved it.
As the lone Corpsman in a sea of Electronics Techs (both Reactor operators and Navigation types, Engineman, Fire Control, Motor Macs, and a bunch of Torpedomen, and a few quartermasters, Sonar techs, and a radioman, I had my hands full. Never had so much fun in all my life after enlistment. I've been volunteering on her since 1998. Dad had a little over 25 volunteer years on her before he passed.
Dad (Geezer Chief) on Torsk in 2003. My favorite pic of him.
