LM Front Speaker Replacement options?

Post by dixon5553 »

Hello - Aside from CLARKS, I am looking for sources to buy a new 10 ohm front replacement speaker for a LM coupe.
Anyone know of any sources? Thanks.

I sent my cores to a guy in California. I saw one he had done for my restoration guy Cody and it looked like new. I'm expecting mine back any day now and I expect it will be new looking too.

Original used Corvair speakers may suffer from degraded sound due to the age of the speaker cone material. Cone material may be damaged or torn as they wear out with exposure to heat, moisture, and usage. You may be happier with a modern replacement.

A professionally rebuilt/reconstructed speaker IS essentially a "Modern Speaker" if it was done correctly.
Which from the sounds of it, the guy that Cody uses, does it correctly.

I have been considering a couple different aftermarket Speakers offered by Custom Autosound.
It appears that they might work in a Late model Corvair if a single "Stereo" type Speaker is desired.

One is listed as a 1966 1967 Nova Dual Voice Coil Dash Speaker With AC.
It is a 5" x 7" Dual Voice Coil 140 Watt Speaker.
Manufacturer Part Number. 4009 DVC http://www.ebay.com/itm/180281919730

The other is listed as Custom Autosound 3015DVC
It is a 5" x 7" Dual Voice Coil 140 Watt Speaker.
Manufacturer Part Number 3015 DVC http://www.ebay.com/itm/263370623260

Both of these appear to be essentially the same speaker but may have different mounting brackets included.
They are in the $60.00 to $65.00 price range plus taxes and shipping, depending on the vendor that offers them.
Attached is a photo of the box for a 3015 DVC Speaker.

Guys do you realize the corvair factory-stock radio needs a 10ohm speaker other wise you’ll damage the radio over time. So anyone found a 10 ohm speaker that under $75 ?

In my first '65 corvair it had a stock, factory looking speaker that had, wrote in yellow wrecking yard pen '64 Impala. So there could be other sites to check for a stock speaker.

I may be wrong, but I have always thought you can run the two 4 ohm coils in series to give you an 8 ohm load and that will be within tolerance for a stock radio.

The LM Corvairs use pretty much the same speaker as its peers in the Chevy lineup from that era.

Do you want a speaker for the original AM or AM/FM radio or are you asking for a modern stereo in the car?

For the modern stereo there are a number of sources for dual speakers in the same sized assembly as the original speaker. They are 4” speakers so Bass is a little lacking but at least with Retrosound you can adjust frequency ranges and get some pretty good sound out of them.

I couldn’t bring myself to cut anything on my pretty much original car so went with a dual in dash speaker up front and surface mounted speakers in the rear. Unfortunately the rear speakers get covered when the top is down but there is so much wind noise at that point I don’t feel it matters.

I'm pretty sure that's why he is asking....

I've worked on many Delco radios over the years and always tested them on the bench with an 8 ohm speaker. In my cars I always used 8 ohm replacements. Even when I installed a later model AM/FM stereo in a Corvair (earlies are easy, with some case modification... :tu: ) I ran 8 ohm speakers in the back package tray and those radios were still 10 ohm rated each channel. I'll just say "Good Enough". :tu:

Do note if one is to run an 8 ohm speaker on a Delco radio with the DS501 or DS503 germanium output transistor there is a bias adjustment to account for the difference. But I have run many 8 ohm speakers without doing the adjustment.

A restored speaker is one with a new cone and suspension, so basically new speaker with an old cleaned up steel holder.

I had a hard time putting any speaker into my 66 front with AC. There is NO ROOM! Currently I have a 6" round in there. No, it does not sound right! I will get back to it.... :rolling:

I've looked at those too, as I like the fact that they mount in the factory location but have stereo sound.

thanks everyone for the input - I just got a Delco OE AM/FM radio for my 66 couple and was told the factory dash speaker is 10 ohm - I just wanted to prevent any "stress" on this 58-year-old radio by using say a 4-ohm speaker - but an 8 ohm sounds like it will not cause an issue to the radio.

On another RADIO question - how can I open the radio's chassis up to clean the "pots" with contact cleaner - I am referring to the metal radio housing - thanks

Remove the two 1/4" hex headed screws on either the top or bottom panel. :my02:

Back in the day I would get the 4x6 8 ohm speakers from Radio Shack and they sounded really good. I never had a radio fail because of that.

I received an Email today from OER - an older parts specialist. (I have supplied them with some other parts.) They are listing several new 10 Ohm speakers for mid-60s GM cars, including a couple of 6 x 10s. . They are not listing a Corvair specific one, but one looks like it would push up into place and mate with the stock clamp. I will probably be getting one to check out. Probably around $60. I will let you know if/when, and how it fits.
