You can add blocks of wood to the pads to add more space between the crossbars and the bottom of the car. I believe that the instruction call for a minimum 1" clearness between the pads and the car because there is alot of pressure on a scissors jack at the very flat position. So don't make the blocks too high or drive the car up on some wood blocks first. I needed to remove the long heater duct from my '65 and the crossbar was in the way. Since the car was all apart I didn't want to lower it and start over. I blocked up the lift so that it wouldn't fall and removed the crossbar. When I went to reinstall the crossbar the lift had shifted and it was real hard to put it back together.
