For sure I (now) wish I had released the ball joint over releasing the inner pivot. But what is done is done. In the end the result is the same though my method was more precarious. To quote Jeff Spicolli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High - "Danger is my business."

As to releasing tapered fits... . In 1976 I spent a year at Los Angeles Trade Technical College in the machine shop program. We had a tall, wiry student who resembled J.J. (Jimmy "Dynamite" Walker) on the TV show "Good Times." This slender, lightweight guy got a tool lodged in the Horizontal Mill so tight that the (heftier) teacher was hitting it like he was swinging for a home run with a 10 pound hammer. He must have hit the piece 10-20 times before it finally came loose.

Thanks this is probably the method I'll use when the time comes.

What ever method you use, fasten a chain around the spring and control arm for added safety. Keep your head out of the wheel well when releasing tension!
