65 coupe door latch problem

When locking the driver's door from inside, it won't unlock when pulling the handle up, and the rod is attached. I have to reach behind me and pull up on the inside door button. I pulled out the latch and I've really cleaned the latch mechanism and lubricated it up and no go. I ordered a used latch and after cleaning and lubricating, it does't work either.

I've been told that the 68 & 69 do not have the automatic unlocking latch like my 65 should have so maybe years ago my latch was replaced with the 68-69 latch.
I"m just tired of having to reach behind me to unlock the inside door button.
The passenger's side works perfectly.
I've got the driver's side door completely gutted and I decided to attack the door latch problem at this time also.
I ordered a used latch from a parts supplier and it did the same thing. And this is after I soaked it in parts cleaner and liberally lubricated it.
