Drop-Spindles?

Post by American Mel »

I know guys have used S-10 drop-Spindles to lower Corvairs, but . . . . . .
which ones?
Which years?
What all is entailed?
How much mods, and which brakes are used afterwards.

I tried to search the topic.
Even found a thread titled "Dropped Spindles", but when I tried to open it, I got a strange message stating,
"No posts exist inside this topic for the selected time frame."
I thought I had it figured out, in my user setting, but that didn't change anything, afterall.

Yes, I DO know how to do a "Search", and I did so.
BUUUUUT, when I click on any of the SEARCH results, I get this message about the "Time Frame"!
Why can't I get into any of these old threads?

Mel,
I just tried this, there is a box with a drop down that will "limit results to previous" and there are selections there. Mine is set to all results, and I found a bunch of posts about drop spindles. I accessed it by searching while your post was open on my screen. Hope this helps.

Let's see if this link works to some discussion about S10 spindles

Hmm, I clicked on the gear (like Windows Settings Gear) of the search window at the top of the page and way down the list I found:

Limit results to previous: (imagine space here, and a box around:) All Results

If I click on All Results I get choices of time frames. I left it on All Results like I found it.

Guys, I can do the search. (and YES, it is set to ALL POSTS)
I even get a few pages(3) of results.
The problem arises when I click to open any of them, I STILL get the same message.

GREAT! :tu:
BUUUUUT, how does Mel (me, myself, and I), get to see them?
What other settings need to be changed, or what am I doing wrong?
.
Otherwise, maybe someone can just answer the questions in my first post?

Hello American Mel

You asked:
which ones? there are both cast and forged spindles from many suppliers, but they're pretty much all the same 2" drop as far as I know

Which years? 1982-2004

What all is entailed? How much mods, The ball joints are different (bigger) on S10, so you either change the ball joints or have Mike LeVeque modify a set for you to fit the Corvair ball joints. You'll also need to drill a hole through the spindle for a speedometer drive, LeVeque can do that also.

and which brakes are used afterwards. Most use the stock S10 brakes which provide plenty of stopping power

There are some good comments in the link I sent yesterday viewtopic.php?t=2333

I bought a set of cast spindles but they were so heavy I decided not to use them. LeVeque can lighten them a bit

I haven't messed with any of my settings and the posts open fine for me. Try a different browser?

Everybody that has tried to help me, THANK-YOU!
I appreciate the efforts.
But the forum gods are against me.
I tried the working links you guys have provided, and still get that same old message.
I tried using a different browser and still got the same old message.
I guess I'll give it up so far as attempting to read old threads.

Marty, thanks for the information, greatly appreciate it. :tu:

if you type exactly that error message into a search engine, you will find other forums where users had this problem and may find a solution. I am not saying their solution is guaranteed to fix your problem but maybe it would help a Corvair forum admin help you debug this.

For example, in another forum this user found his display settings had been set to only show posts from the last 7 days:
He claims his solution involved the following steps:
login -> user control panel -> board preferences -> edit display options->Display topics from previous days
and Display posts from previous days

hope this helps fix your error.

I got my lowered S-10 spindles from Mr. Leveque (SP?) a few years ago, and of course I cant find those old emails any more to give you his contact info. I think I have pics somewhere, will post if I can find them. My recollection is he welded up the ball joint holes to a smaller hole size and then reamed them to fit Corvair ball joints. I went with the big-bore Speedway calipers and tried a couple of Chevy truck dual masters until I got the pedal pressure I liked. I didnt like the cast-in steering arms on the S-10 hubs, cut those off and modded the hubs to take Corvair fast-ratio arms. I later did the monoball front end conversion that Matt Nall showed on the (old/good) CCF forum.

Are drop spindles even needed? I cut one coil off the stock front springs on every late model I own and it drops the front perfectly, the stance and handling are perfect to me like this, been doing it forever and makes a noticeable improvement. :tu:

Thanks scooperman!
I had gone through before and checked those settings, but somehow they were the problem.
Not sure how they got reduced to a One Year setting, but now it is fixed.
Again, THANKS TO ALL who provided an answer on this thread. :tu:
