Ignition switch labels?

Post by dcmarciano »

I'm re-wiring some melted wires on my '68 and would like to label the wires going into the ignition switch before I heat shrink them. My ignition switch has 5 wires (not 6 like a '68 should) and I don't really know what's what. I've spend hours looking at '65 wiring diagram and '68 supplement wiring diagram. Could someone give me a general idea of what these wires are controlling? So far I figure I'll label:
red power wire: PWR
pink/pink-blk: ON
purple/purple-wt: S (for start)
brown: ?
green: ?
Please correct me if I have anything wrong of course. I've attached my version of a small wiring diagram. Please don't hesitate to point out anything that looks wrong.

Thanks in advance

The big wiring changes happened in 1967. 1968 is almost the same.
In 1968 there was the addition of the "KEY IN IGNITION DOOR OPEN BUZZER". This was part of the anti-theft/safety changes. If you opened the drivers door (only the drivers door) with the key in the ignition an annoying buzzer sounded.

BTW - the 1968/69 Corvairs had a special dual terminal door switch. Many GM cars used it then so it is reproduced.

O.K. According to my 68 diagrams that have a number of errors marked up ----
RED - POWER IN
PINK - Power out to coil and to fuse for gauges WITH KEY ON or START, but NO POWER OUT on ACC.
PURPLE - Power out to starter solenoid WITH KEY IN START
BROWN - Power out to ACC fuses and turn signal WITH KEY ON or ACC.

PINK/BLACK (may be PINK) - Power FROM buzzer that must be grounded via key in switch AND door open switch.
BLACK (might be white) - Wire from door switch that grounds power via PINK/BLACK wire through ignition switch.

The 1967,68,69 ignitions switches also had a ground terminal. Some say it was used, but the few 67-69 wiring harnesses I've look at have no wire in the connector to the ignition switch ground terminal. The terminal is grounded to the switch case that contacts the dash housing metal ground.

I hope this helps, BUT keep in mind who knows what has been changed on your cars wiring over the years.

OK, thanks. I'll label my brown wire ACC and leave the last wire (bottom most position) unlabeled for now. I think it is the equivalent to the black wire you mentioned. I'll try to hook everything up without melting the heat shrink first so I can test voltage coming out of the wires. Once that is done, I need to determine if my resistance wire to the coil if functional.

Here is a link to an article describing the different ignition switches. It may help you. Maybe someone replaced the ignition switch and connector on your 68 with one from an earlier car. There is a chart in the last part of the article. See viewtopic.php?p=125153&hilit=key#p125153

Attached is a picture of Standard Motors US54 that should be in your car (68-69).

As you can see it has 6 terminals, plus one GND terminal. The two "KEY" terminals for buzzer are in the center. If you expand it in .jpg screen you can read the terminal names.

Thanks for the picture Steve --- I had a used 69 harness, but someone cut off the ignition switch socket. Now I can make up a diagram of the of the connector for my notes. :tu:
