Re: Ralley wheel
There are hundreds of Chevrolet Rally Wheels in many different styles, diameters, widths, and wheel lug patterns. They can often be located on eBay, and replicas are offered like those shown here...

bbodie52, the Summit web site says they don't have a wheel for the 1965 Corvair
Is my bolt pattern 5 x 4-3/4 or 5 x 4?

Re: Ralley wheel
No, they would not list a wheel as a replacement for the 13" 1965 Corvair wheel size. You can find Rally Wheel styles for Camaros and other Chevrolets and a variety of GM products, but their listing will be in 14" or 15" diameters for the most part, and with several different widths and with a variety of backspacing dimensions. The late model Corvair has a good deal of room in those wheel wells, but you must upsize to a wheel diameter larger than the original factory 13" size to fit rally wheel styles and modern performance tires on your Corvair.
http://autoxer.skiblack.com/tires.html
For a proper fit you will be looking for a 14" or 15" wheel with the above 5 lug pattern with about a 7" width and 4" backspacing, and an appropriate tire size to match.
Lug Pattern - This is the number of lugs used to hold the wheel on, and the diameter of a circle drawn through the center of the lug holes in the wheel. Earlies use 4 lugs on a 4 1/2" circle (4 x 4 1/2"), lates and FCs use 5 lugs on a 4 3/4" circle (5 x 4 3/4").

These wheels were Ansen Sprint 14"x7" instead of the above mentioned 15" diameter. Goodyear Polyglas bias ply tire size E70x14 is equivalent to a modern day radial tire size 205/70R14
14" or 15", both with 4" backspacing and 7" width will work on late model Corvairs. With 15" diameter wheels the tire aspect ratio must be adjusted somewhat to maintain the same approximate outside diameter and Revs per Mile numbers to ensure body clearance.
Front: BF Goodrich Radial T/A P205/70 R14 Overall Diameter: 25.4" Revs per Mile: 821 Sect. Width: 8.2” Tread Width: 6.2"
Front: BF Goodrich Radial T/A P205/60 R15 Overall Diameter: 24.7" Revs per Mile: 842 Sect. Width: 8.2” Tread Width: 6.7" or possibly...
Front: BF Goodrich Radial T/A P215/60 R15 Overall Diameter: 25.2" Revs per Mile: 827 Sect. Width: 8.7” Tread Width: 7.3"
Rear: BF Goodrich Radial T/A P235/60 R14 Overall Diameter: 25.1" Revs per Mile: 829 Sect. Width 9.5" Tread Width 7.9"
Rear: BF Goodrich Radial T/A P215/60 R15 Overall Diameter: 25.2" Revs per Mile: 827 Sect. Width: 8.7” Tread Width: 7.3" or possibly...
Rear: BF Goodrich Radial T/A P225/60 R15 Overall Diameter: 25.6" Revs per Mile: 813 Sect. Width: 9.0” Tread Width: 7.5"
All of the above specs are from the Tire Rack website. Be careful when desk topping your tire selection, a slightly more conservative choice will help to ensure body and suspension component clearance. Choosing the same size for the rear as selected for the front will allow rotating the tires front to rear to extend tire wear. If your preferred wheel style is a Rally wheel, select wheels with the same backspacing and diameter to match your tire choice, and check the Tire Rack table to see if 6" to 7" is an acceptable rim width for your chosen tire size. Vendors will generally not know what will properly fit a Corvair, so it is up to you to do the necessary homework and reading to ensure your selection will fit.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Incidentally, with the correct tire outside diameter and revs per mile, many tires and wheel combinations in 14", 15", 16" and 17" can fit properly on a late model Corvair. I am currently running 17" diameter 7" wide rims on my 1966 Corvair Monza 4-door sedan, with the following tires:
GOODYEAR EAGLE EXHILARATE - SIZE: 215/45ZR17 (OVERALL DIAMETER of 24.7", and REVS PER MILE of 848). With these tires my Corvair Monza speedometer displays an exact match in speed with my TomTom GPS and with several local radar display speed signs. There was a very slight tire rubbing on the right front wheel opening when making tight parking lot maneuvers, requiring a small amount of body surgery at the interference point. No clearance problems were noted on the left front, and no problems at the rear. Scott Howey made similar recommendations for using 17" wheels on a Late Model Corvair...
Scott Howey Advice:
Front= 17x7, 4" backspace, 215/45ZR17 tires.
Rear = 17x8, 4.5" backspace, 225/50ZR17 tires.
Wheels: Foose Knuckle Series Gunmetal

Re: Ralley wheel
One thing to keep in mind is the rim back space and width.
The Corvair rim had a 4.25" offset with a 5.5" rim width.
A 6" wide rim with a 4.5" backspace clears the suspension and maintains the same geometry for correct "scrub radius" (you can't use tire chains - doubtful that is an issue).
A 205/70X14" tire fits well on a 6" rim and with a 4.5" backspace maintains the original suspension geometry.
I run a 235/60X14" on the rear with 7" wide rim with a 4.5" backspace. It fits and there in no concern about scrub radius on the rear
A lot of folks run rims with the other backspace dimensions and they work, if not optimally. Sometimes folks have to "bend" the fender lip for tire clearance, etc.

Summit has these ralleys 34-473404 which are a 14 x 7 with back space of 4 inches. (5 x 4-3/4" Bolt pattern)
Seems pretty safe. Do you guys agree?
$99.00 each plus ring and centre and lug nuts.

Re: Ralley wheel
I believe the second wheel, with 4.25" backspacing, is closer to the ideal mark for the late model Corvair...
Don't forget the style and cost of center caps, trim rings, valve stems and lugs, and appropriate tires and tire mounting labor will add significantly to the total cost.

Re: Ralley wheel
According to Tire Rack, BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires in 14" diameter are available in the following sizes...
RADIAL T/A
P205/70R14 *
P215/60R14
P215/70R14
P225/60R14
P225/70R14
P235/60R14 *
P245/60R14
The original Goodyear Eagle ST tires that came with my car are no longer available. The replacement BF Goodrich Radial T/A tire sizes I selected are marked above with an asterisk. I'm not sure of the backspacing on my wheels (I'm guessing 4"), but with an extra 1/4 inch your front may accept slightly more tire tread width. The front tire size that I used will work OK on 5-7" rims, and the rear 2.35/60R14 will fit on 6.5-8.5" rims. You could use the front size all around, or try bumping the sizes all around up a notch with the same size all around as a compromise, or go with the two different sizes front and rear. (Keeping one size all around allows you to rotate the wheels for better, more even tire wear). Study the tire dimensions on the Tire Rack website, and choose carefully, and maybe a little conservatively to ensure adequate body and front suspension clearances.
Front: Goodyear Eagle ST P195/70 R14
Overall Diameter: 24.8" Revs per Mile: 839 Sect. Width: 7.9" Tread Width: 6.1"

Overall Diameter: 25.1" Revs per Mile: 829 Sect. Width 9.5" Tread Width 7.9"
The ideal tire diameter produces 825 revolutions per mile but can go to 850 revolutions per mile and the speedometer only be 3% fast, or 2 MPH at 60.
Of course the Tire Rack also lists 14" tires in other brands, if you don't want raised white letters on the sidewall, or if you prefer a different brand or tire design.

I'd like to utilize 4 tires of the same size. Do you think 215/70-14 (25.9 inch OD) or 215/75-14 (26.7 inch OD) would be too big, front and rear?

Re: Ralley wheel
I would say neither of the tires, with a 70 or 75 aspect ratio would work. Too Tall. The P225/60R14 listed below (in green) splits the difference in section width or tread width with the two tires I used, but it comes up a little short in overall diameter, producing too many revs per mile (which would affect your speedometer accuracy with the speedometer drive on the left-front wheel).Rick's 65 turbo wrote: » Wed Apr 14, 2021 1:41 pm

If you want a safe size for all four corners, I would think the tire I used on the front, P205/70R14, would be safe on the front and wide enough on the back. Trying to put the rear size on all four corners may result in a conflict with the body or suspension on the front -- even with the added backspacing of your wheel choice. Choosing a tire that turns out to have an interference problem that is discovered only after you have them mounted on the wheels and installed on the car is likely to be a real headache.
Any way you look at it, even the P205/70R14 is going to give your Corvair much belter braking and handling than the original 13" factory spec tires ever did! (All specifications are based on the BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires).

Re: Ralley wheel
Hey Guys - I got a 1965 Corvair (convertible) with stock rims and stock tires. I've done a lot of work on it and it runs like a swiss watch.
EVERYTHING is stock on it . . it does not leak or burn a drop of oil. I re-did the O-Rings on the Pushrods and rebuilt the carbs and numerous other things. I say all this to make up for my lack of knowledge when it comes to tires and rims. I know how to replace the ball joints (and have!) but
I couldn't tell you what P205/70R14 tire size means. So . . the question is: can I put P205/70R14 size tires on my stock rims ?! or do I need new rims as well. While we are talking about rims . . I think a saw a '65 Vair with Cragar's that looked really badass on another post/board ?! anybody recommend a size or model of Crager's that they are using or heard of on '65's without clearance issues ?!
Thanks in advance for any helpful advice you might have.
Boo
