1964 Monza Spyder dash

Post by Kramer »

Why does my dash have the rectangular slot and two holes on the right? It's a Monza Spyder, so no Powerglide option available.

All the spyder gauge clusters have a boss molded into the panel. GM must have planned a version with the PG trans. As to why yours is punched out, I'm not sure. The dash may have came from another car(installed in a PG car in the past). Your horn button isn't from a spyder either. I would research your VIN to see what you have.

Parts may be interchanged. We bought this in the mid eighties, from a guy who had quite a few Corvairs. This one is missing the 150 hp turbo engine and had a two carb in its place. I'd like to find a complete '64 150 engine to put back in.

Sorry for the poor pics. The car is in a heated garage, awaiting restoration.

Well good news, the 0627 indicates a spyder coupe. So it a legit spyder. Over the years many things can get changed. I'm sure if you want to find a turbo motor for your car someone here may have one or steer you in the right direction.
I have a 64 spyder motor in my 61 Monza. Love the boost. It really scoots when prompted.
Another tell that your car is a spyder is the exhaust cutout on the right rear panel.

Thanks for all the info. I'm still confused why the dash has the slot and two holes. Isn't the the Spyder-only dash? I thought the Spyders were the only ones to get a tach, 120 mph speedo, boost (inches HG) and cyl head temp. Which, if I'm right, means no auto trans. So why does mine have what appears to be the RNDL indicator slot. And what's with the two holes?

Maybe I'm wrong, and this is a standard dash. Or at least the bezel (or whatever the aluminum cover) came off a different model.

Again, thanks for the input.

That is correct. Spyder dashes did not come with that rectangular hole in them. They did have the bosses in the back for an auto trans lever mount and the casting had a distinct indent from the rear so that if someone wanted to (and I have done a couple) he could cut out the rectangle and install the dash in an automatic car. Your dash has apparently been cut out for some reason. Some P/O maybe stuck a switch there? Maybe the dash was modified for an automatic trans for some reason and then found its way to your car? Who knows?

That makes the most sense. This car has been messed with, but not that much. It's a great candidate for restoration some day. Soon as I get a garage and a lift, it'll get a proper 150 engine installed. I'm looking for a complete, proper engine, but I'm not in a hurry to buy. Thanks for all the advice.

The picture below shows the back of the Spyder instrument panel. You can see that the casting was designed to allow for a Powerglide transmission shift lever installation, but GM engineers later determined that turbocharged engine performance with the 2-speed automatic transmission was poor, so the Spyder was never actually offered with an automatic transmission.

Awesome pics. One of these days, this car will get the correct motor and be running again. I have a 110, but I don't want to stick just any motor back in it. I'll post about it here, but it's gonna be a while. Too many other projects.
