VIN data doesn't match under the hood

Post by MaybeMonzaGuy »

I'm looking at purchasing a 64 Monza. The vin reads 40927W193717. From what I can find this is a 900 series, with the 09 start, not the Spyder series. My problem in verifying the car is that it has what sure looks like a standard Spyder turbo, so the VIN should star with a 406xxxxxxxx. Can someone help me out here. And possibly steer me in the direction of a specs manual.

thanks

1964 was the only model year that included a separate model identification for the Monza Spyder. If the you are buying was a Monza Spyder, the VIN would be: 40627W193717. The car you are looking at may be a Spyder clone with a body/chassis of a non-Spyder that had all Spyder components (instrument panel/glove box door, turbo engine, Spyder badging on the body) transferred from donor vehicle.

A TELLTALE SIGN...If there was a body/chassis swap with Spyder components transferred, it is unlikely that the special Spyder exhaust cutout would have been duplicated, since a body modification would have been needed...

A picture of your Corvair Body Tag (in the engine compartment) may also provide some clues.
