'64 has knock and smoking
Re: '64 has knock and smoking
Great suggestions. Thx
Got another project started, so it will be a while getting back to the Corvair. But looking forward to trying these.

Re: '64 has knock and smoking
Finally back to the ‘64 Corvair.
Still slipping into 2nd gear.
Last time I had to release parking brake and rock the car to get it out of 2nd thru the side plate.
I have a second transmission off a ‘62 with a locked up engine. This one does appear to shift on the bench. But not easily.
Since I may have to remove the offending transmission for repair, I’m thinking about trying to ‘62 transmission. Not looking forward to dropping the engine again.
Suggestions? Please!!

'62 transmission requires the '62 input shaft so you would need to drop everything to pull the transaxle off the engine. Did you check the externally accessible detents?

Not sure I know how to check detects.
I have removed the reverse switch and detent. I believe it is reinstalled correctly. Ball first, then spring, then switch. ????
I see a second accessible detent but is that for other gears? Like second?

Pulled second detent next to reverse switch-detent. See pictures.
Appears to be correct sequence (ball spring then cap). But very little if any tension from spring as cap is screened back in. Should there be a spacer to give tension?

Joelsplace, I read your last post again.
Are you saying’62 transmission will not matchup with ‘64 differential?

Re: '64 has knock and smoking
what he said was that the input shaft that runs from the clutch through the differential and into the forward gear of the trans mission is different between 62 and 64 transmissions. You would need to take the engine and differential apart from each other to remove the shaft and swap it or to verify if it will or will not work. The splines at the trans end of the shaft are different as is the diameter at the input shaft seal in the differential nose.

Re: '64 has knock and smoking
Wow. That sounds ominous. Not sure it’s worth that as well as R & R of engine.
Thx for the insight. I would have never guessed that difference.
Maybe repairing transmission is better long term, since I have no idea the ‘62 transmission is good.

There should be spring tension on the detent ball. There is no spacer. Just stretch the spring a small amount.

Re: '64 has knock and smoking
I'm back to work on my '64 Corvair that locks-up in 2nd gear.(Too may projects...)
Pulled drive train and started looking at 4-speed transmission synchronizers, but they look OK.
Started disassembly to replace synchronizers anyway but discovered "interlock" parts not all there.
Only one "Interlock" and no "interlock pin". Apparently there should be two interlocks with the pin in-between.
Apparently you can not buy these Interlock (out of stock). I have a ''62 transmission that I disassembled for parts.
It has two interlocks but also no interlock pin.
Questions: First, is the missing interlock likely why it is locking in 2nd gear? or is it still the synchronizer?
Second, is the "interlock pin" required? if so, can I make one out of roll stock and what are the dimensions?
Thanks for your help,
Larry

Re: '64 has knock and smoking
All the interlock parts need to be there to keep it from going into 2 gears at once (or trying to).

Re: '64 has knock and smoking
I can get second interlock from ‘62 but it also doesn’t have the “pin”. (I’ve fished around with magnet and not in bottom of ‘62. )
Can not find one to buy. Anyone have the dimensions, so I can make one.
I suspect it is needed to make shifting and interlock work correctly/smoothly.
Thx,
Larry

Re: '64 has knock and smoking
FYI... 1961-1963 transmissions require a 12-spline input shaft, in place of the 14-spline input shaft used in 1964 transmissions.

Re: '64 has knock and smoking
At this point, I’m just pulling parts from the ‘62 4-speed to replace missing parts in the ‘64.
Problem is interlock PIN is missing from both.
So I need a replacement pin. Since I can’t find a pin to buy, I need to make one but don’t know dimensions.
Are there any detailed specs on those interlock parts? Most needed is dimensions on the interlock pin.

Sorry I just saw this. I don't know where you would find dimensions. Did you call Clark's to see if they have one?
