Rear Grill Repair
I was wondering what type of welding is required to repair the rear grill on a 64 coupe. It has a little tear on one end and the holes on each end are torn out a little. I'm not sure if those areas can be welded and, and if so, what type of welding would be used to repair them. The grill is in pretty good condition except for those areas, and any welding on them would not show. Thanks for passing on any experiences you have had. Larry

Re: Rear Grill Repair
I have not seen anything on repair or restoration of the 1964 or earlier grills. Perhaps others will have some information on that possibility. If not, a replacement new reproduction or possibly some good used replacements may be possibilities from the sources listed below...

They are aluminum so you would TIG weld them. I've never seen it done.

Re: Rear Grill Repair
I am not sure what aluminum alloy GM was using, but it is most likely in the 3000 or 5000 series of alloys. Clean off the clear anodize and oil in the area of the tear and you should be able to have them welded. I am not sure how bad yours are but after the repairs even if you polish the repairs, the area will be a different color than the rest of the grill.

Re: Rear Grill Repair
Thank you for the comments. All it really needs is just a couple of spot welds with the welder to do what I need. None of the repaired areas will show unless you are laying on your back to look at it. The visible part of the grill is otherwise in very nice shape. Thanks again.

Will the 64' repop fit a 63" Monza 900 CPE?

Re: Rear Grill Repair
Update to my rear grill repair. I ended up using an industrial type glue and gluing tin gussets on the inside of the ends of the grill and redrilling the holes to mount it with. Worked just fine.
