voltage regulator elimination?

Post by gotahavit »

Can it be eliminated by a single wire alternator? My mech wants to remove it by replacing the alternator with something he called a single wire. Anyone out there do this change.

The regulator can and should be eliminated if converting to a late internally regulated alternator. I would suggest NOT using a 1 wire. A regular 10SI Gm alternator (I tell the parts store I want one for a 74 Nova with A/C...results in a 60amp unit), is easily converted to Corvair use as long as you have a Corvair alternator end frame, fan, and oil filter/alternator adapter (if the car has generator currently). The 10SI provide a wire output to feed the tell tale gen/fan light in the dash which is a good thing to have in case you lose a belt.
Corvair guy since 1982. I have personally restored at least 20 Vairs, many of them restored ground up.
Currently working full time repairing Corvairs and restoring old cars.

The Corvair engine rotates in the opposite direction, so it is important to retain the fan portion of the housing to provide the alternator with the correct cooling fan design to match the engine rotation direction.

You might also consider the information in this thread. A more-modern, common, economical remanufactured Delco 10SI internally regulated alternator coupled with your existing Delco 10DN pulley/fan housing (Needed for Corvair mount and reverse-rotation cooling fan compatibility) will give you a significant update, increased output, eliminates the old external electro-mechanical regulator, etc. If your pulley housing bearing is making noise, you can replace it easily with a new bearing from Clark's.

Use an internally regulated 10SI or 12SI Delco alternator off a slightly later GM product. A true one wire setup is NOT recommended. Here a special self exciting regulator is installed in a 10SI style alternator. Control of the dash idiot light is lost if this is used. The warning light for the GEN/FAN is very important on the air-cooled Corvair engine. Also, the single wire alternator often will not initialize properly until a high engine RPM level is reached. At startup/idle the alternator may have no output, and if you continue driving at low engine speeds the alternator may never "self-excite" the internal regulator, leaving he driver with no charging system warning light and no charging system. Your first indication of a discharged battery condition may come when you shut the engine off and later turn the key to start the engine, and discover that the battery is to far gone to crank the engine!

This M&H adaptor eliminates the external regulator and adapts your existing Corvair wiring to work properly with the new internally regulated solid state alternator.
