Torque converter
Can the torque converter in EM be checked for tightness to the flex plex with out dropping or lowing the engine?

Re: Torque converter
Yes. You have to remove the tin forward of the fan shroud. There is a window on the top right of the bell housing that also had a tin insert that will come out to access the bolts.

Re: Torque converter
This illustration shows the flex plate access hole and cover, and how the flex plate attaches to the torque converter.
This picture shows the access hole cover, that can be seen when the forward sheet metal shroud is removed.

Re: Torque converter
Found two lose bolts in the torque converter and one missing I guess I will have to pull the motor and I need a new torque converter and flexplate I think. Sent from my moto g(6) play using Corvair Forum mobile app

Why not replace the missing bolt and tighten the others?

Corvair guy since 1982. I have personally restored at least 20 Vairs, many of them restored ground up.

Re: Torque converter
My concern would be, where did the missing bolt go?

Re: Torque converter
The PG bell housings have a large opening at the bottom for cooling airflow. The bolt probably fell through it. Probably...

Re: Torque converter
In any case there is pretty good clearance for the bolt to fall down and out. It could be in the bellhousing, but, it likely fell out.

Re: Torque converter
Lots of room to look around with an inspection camera if you are worried about it but the vent holes are so large I don't see how it could get trapped anywhere.

Re: Torque converter
If you get under the car you will see that the bottom of the bell housing is wide open, as part of the air cooling for the torque converter. Like mentioned above, the missing bolt probably is long gone, having fallen out of the bottom.

Re: Torque converter
Actually the bottom is solid. The lower half on the passenger side it open.

Re: Torque converter
Yes that is correct, I was referring to that opening to the side. GM did that for air flow, my friends 62 Nova had a similarly shaped bell housing to help in cooling for the transmission. Either way, it is a big enough opening that it is not likely that any hardware would stay in there, more than likely the missing bolt is long gone.
