Shop Manual Read Engine Chapter

Post by California Racer »

Read engine section in '62 or '64 shop manual.

Corvaronauts have pdf's up there.

Reading it cleared up a lot.

You sure want to get an engine with a good rear casting!

Crankshaft is ABOVE camshaft!

Very useful reading the shop manual.

Note there are reported to be two types of rear engine (accessory) castings --- sand and die cast. The die cast in good condition look better.

Thanks! These Corvairs sure are interesting!

Figured out to get a Chilton's all Corvairs 60-69 manual.

Manual I read confirmed no cam bearings!

Was told there are oil passages drilled to them though, so that's a little comforting.

I guess you just plastigage them and think happy thoughts they are in good shape.

Seems like it might get old putting two sides of cases together over and over again to blueprint engine.

Looks like it's important get get fan with good bearing.

Looking good so far!

Yes bolting the cases together just to check the cam journals is extra work. One of reasons the Corvair engine overhaul is more labor intensive vs. a cast iron straight six. Lots of parts to assemble also. When I hear folks say they can overhaul a Corvair engine for little money I figure it is a kludge rebuild with lots of short cuts.

Davemotohead over on the corvaircenter has posted some pics. of badly repaired/rebuilt engines. Amazing the poor workmanship you find with some old car repairs.

I bought a car for a good price because the engine would not run. When I pulled the engine apart I found some "Corvair expert" who rebuilt it had used standard crank bearing on a crankshaft cut 0.010"!!!! That crank was reduced to junk. The transaxle was claimed to have been rebuilt, but it was junk. Fortunately the "Corvair Expert" is out of business now.

Just want to clear about what I am going to do with our engine.

Just take it apart and check condition.

If there is nothing really ready to let go in there will just put it back together.

Maybe some new parts here and there.

Looking to get more play value per dollar.
