Removing that wonderful YH carb
I'm having a heck of a time gaining access to the two 1/2" nuts holding the carb in. Ive got a short open end wrench but still....man its frustrating me. Is there a trick to this that I should know? Like holding my breath with a mouthful of root beer and hopping on one foot? Someone help me not start hating this car

I haven't owned a turbo Corvair since 1971, so I don't have any hands-on experience with this procedure. Are you working from the shop manual? The procedure is listed below, and a copy of the 1965 chapter is attached.

I cut a ring spanner down so its only about 2" long. works a treat - the spanner has to be one with a thin profile ring shape
and its certainly had some use in the last 6 months!!

Crow's foot wrench/sockets Harbor Freight?
https://www.harborfreight.com/7-piece-3 ... 94426.html
Better tell them you just want to take the one when you get home and see if it fits first.
They will probably take them back if it doesn't work.
Without being there it is hard to say.
Must be some way to do it.
Machine shop could make one for you.
Just strap or bar of right length with 1/2" you say notch cut in it.
Be friendly and they might make one reasonably for you.

I thought about a crows foot....however I may go the route of the cut down spanner like guru suggested. This has been driving me mad!

Okay.
Must be a way to get them off. That's for sure.
Let me just throw in 1/4" long extension with universal joint.
That usually solves a lot of these situations. Usually.
Also.
Chisel and hammer.Hit corners of hex. Put new ones on when you put it back together.
Maybe you shoudn't do that.If studs are in aluminum that might rock them too much and wreck stud threads.
If you don't have a good feel for this kind of thing don't use hammer and chisel.

Could you describe the problem some more?
1 Can you get an open end or box end wrench on both the nuts?
2 Problem with swinging wrench?
3 Can what's in the way be removed?
Take some pictures in the morning and post them.

Re: Removing that wonderful YH carb
many of the fancy options mentioned above just wont work on the YH due to the shape of the body of the carb
a cut down spanner works really well, ive have the carb on and off mine about 20 times in the last six months, and my little cut down has worked a treat
its the nut that's nearest the fire wall that's the utter swine to do, the rearmost and top ones can be undone with a normal spanner

Okay. You can get a single 1/2x9/16 open end or box end wrench from Sears.
I would cut off as little as possible at a time. Give you more leverage.
If you do not enjoy doing this kind of thing (cuttiong and spending time on getting right size home made tool)
Get the wrench sold for this you mentioned.

Here's Obstruction Wrench Set' from Harbor Freight.
https://www.harborfreight.com/5-piece-s ... 99700.html
Then off in right side bar is 'Offset Wrench Set'.
Maybe one or the other or both will help.
