I have a trans/diff/bellhousing assy OUT of what I believe to be a 65.
Are there casting marks or other identifying features externally to positively ID what I have?
Pics are of what I have.

Re: Trans type & differential gear ratio identification
The transmission appears to be a four-speed manual transmission from a 1961-1965 Corvair, based on the stamped steel side cover. The 1966-1969 four-speed transmission has a heavy cast side cover. The differential two-letter code breakdown is shown in the attached CORSA specifications guide.
The Clark's reference below should help you with differential identification...

The problem with shifting the transmission could be a linkage problem, or the transmission could have an internal fault. I have attached a tranmission overhaul guide if you need it. Also, the following link will provide you with Internet sources for downloading shop manuals, supplements, and other valuable Corvair technical guides at no cost in Adobe Reader format.

http://www.corvairkid.com/64fccode.htmDifferential code information
This code is located on the lower-left side of the differential carrier housing.
The format of the code is $$####, where:
$$ = the type identifier:
HQ = Corvair FC, 3.55:1 ratio, manual transmission
HR = Corvair FC, 3.55:1 ratio, manual transmission, limited slip
HS = Corvair FC, 3.55:1 ratio, automatic transmission
HT = Corvair FC, 3.55:1 ratio, automatic transmission, limited slip
#### = the month and day of manufacture (year is assumed)
Notes:
Corvair differentials were built at the Buffalo, NY plant only. Buffalo was the only differential plant to use "H" as the first character, so you could say that "H" identified the Buffalo plant. Buffalo also built differentials for full-size Chevrolets ("B") and Chevelles ("Y").
"HJ"is a code that indicates a Manual Transmission (Positraction) differential with a 3.55 Ratio from 1962-1964.
A capital "I" was used instead of a "1".
