Rear engine, reverse rotation

A few pictures of Steve Lewis' old car....blew it into a million pieces and brought it in for a rebuild. The heads had been cut so many times, the little arrow and 2206 was printed into the squish area...must've been 10.5:1.

Nice looking Buggy. And a million pieces is right. I recently bought a 140 motor (65-66 turbo block) that was in a buggy and one of the pistons has a hole blown in the side of it but it's not anywhere near the damage that one has.

I am sure you have concluded that the TRW forged piston failed at the pin boss. Then failed the pin in the rod small end.
I have seen several like this, including one in my race car that did a similar multipiece failure -one puston and rod went into the woods at Lime Rock race track and was never found.
Excellent example of why not to use TRW or any other piston with a slot, instead of drillled oil holes, for oil return from the oil ring groove.
Custom forged pistons, as described above, are the only type that will survive in a high rpm, high performance Corvair engine.
