Rear Spoiler w/LED Brakelight Ideas?

Post by gpracer89 »

If I decide to add a rear spoiler to my '69 Monza, I woould like to incorporate a brakelight, maybe turn signals into it. Any photos, ideas out there?

Thanks,

Greg

 If you have a rear spoiler style and source in mind, it should not be difficult electrically to piggyback a rear center brake light to activate in conjuntion with the standard brake lights. For more rear illumination, the rear backup lights could also be rewired and appropriate lenses could be installed to double the rear tail light illumination. Center-mounted rear spoiler turn signals may not be possible, unless adequate separation can be established.

If the integrated backup lights were to be reassigned for use as tail lights, separate backup lights could be mountrd under the rear bumper, if desired.

For rear spoiler illumination options, check out the following website...

A center-mount third brake light can be installed by running a separate wire from the brake light switch (at the brake pedal) to the new center light (and providing a ground).

What style is entirely up to you.

Thinking of the "standard" type of spoiler like Clark's sells.

Some great ideas! Had not seen that (obvious!) site.

(Car already has an "auto parts store" 3rd brake light added in back window.)

Thanks much!

Ever thought about the full width LED unit some guys use on pickup trucks that fits just under the tailgate?
Brake light full width, and turn signals are 1/2 the unit width. :my02:

I don't have anything to offer but it sounds like a good idea. Should help by keeping the back of your Vair wrinkle free !

That is the idea. The originals aren't bright by todays standards. The generic 3rd light in the window works, but is a bit hokey looking. I think integrating an LED in the spoiler can look cool and update the car. Will try & photoshop something & post.

These pictures are from a 2000 Chevy Malibu.
I am not sure how this spoiler would work on a Corvair.

I did a tech topic last night at the club meeting about LEDs. It was mostly about better LEDs for interior, instrument lights, under hood lights etc. but we did discuss some brake light applications.

My main goal is always to make the upgrades look like they belong on the car and not look like a JCWhitnety add-on. Take your time and do it right. Keep an eye on all the cars in front of you at stop lights and pay attention to the 3rd brake light strips for ideas.

The whole point of the 3rd brake light is not only to be seen by the car immediately behind you but the cars behind him as well. Put the brake light up as high as practical if you are adding it for safety. For me, this means placement above the back window inside the car shining through the back glass is an optimum location. Brighter tail lights and brake lights is always better too.
