New Dismantling Project
Back in January, Joel found these two engines on Facebook and alerted me to their existence. The owner wanted someone to come take them away (free for the taking). They were about 120 miles from my house. Since Donna was in Texas and I had little else to do that day, I made arrangements with the owner to go pick them up. Once there, I got the back story. He had bought the 2 engines to rebuild them into one flight rated Corvair engine. The engines are a 1966 180 turbo engine (sn covered by shroud) and a 1966> 140 hp engine (case RT). He left them outside and the weather took their toll. I knew from the looks that the engines were in bad shape when he bought them. I believe he had been snookered on the purchase. He decided not to use the engines and left them outside 7 years uncovered. We loaded them up on my flat bed trailer and the loose parts were put in the bed of my truck.
When I got home, I arranged the engines on the trailer, so I could put a bedliner over them to keep additional weather off them. To this day, they are on the trailer. This weekend they will be removed and placed on 4 x 4s in a bed liner, then another to cover them. I will get to them later.
I expect only the nitrided crankshafts will be salvageable. Maybe the magnesium engine fan, alternator front housing & fan and a few other small parts can be used. Turbo is frozen up. Its carb can be rebuilt, if it can be taken apart.

Worth the effort to get the parts. I've picked up a couple engines like that and have gotten a few nice parts out of them.
I am always amazed by folks that let engines and transmission sit outside and let rain get into things. As you said maybe a couple nice crankshafts and the rods will clean up. A few other things will probably be salvageable.
Good luck with the dismantling.

Seems like the sort of task that would be a lot more enjoyable with friends on-hand.

I saw a clown on my local facebook advertising a regular 110 or 95 in about the same condition and asking 850.00 NOT!
Re: New Dismantling Project
Al- I have one of those dismantling projects as well. It was donated to me and awaits further dismantling in the bed of the old pickup. So far the carbs have been taken off and look to be salvageable but frozen up. Good luck with your efforts.

I see a 12 plate cover and an alt adapter also. Does the turbo engine have the long special 4" heater hose extension on the right hand side? May be a rear cover with the long timing tab. There appears to be the '65, '66 thick washer spacer that is suppose to go between the alt brace and the alt.

I will take some close ups of each. I will post when I have them. Right now taking a break from a small concreting job.

Re: New Dismantling Project
Trying to answer all inputs tonight before I put the computer away for the night. So here we go.
66vairguy: Never had much luck selling of old rods out of engines with environmental exposure. The ones I had from the cars I scrapped, different story. Those were not exposed to the elements. Sent them to Clarks and got core price value reduction on my Big Valve Engine Rebuild Parts. If anybody wants the rods out of these engines, they can send a PM from this discussion. There are 24 rods up for grabs. The heads have 6 rockers, balls & nuts. 18 pushrods and 18 pushrod plates also. The rockers on the turbo heads will stay with the heads.
Rotary: Not many friends out here in the country. I retired from Gulfstream and 99% of the friends from work stopped calling. They all live 45 miles from us. I have 2 friends from there that I still talk and meet with weekly. We have common things in our lives. We are all retired from Gulfstream, we all love aviation, we all own Corvairs. One is private pilot with an A&P license and an IA license. He has 3 aircraft of his own to take care of, along with a Corvair and a 1927 Moon. We meet every Monday Morning for breakfast. We have been doing this for past 6 years, well before the 2 of them retired. We have a Special Name for our group of about 6 steady morning regulars. Otherwise, known as the Monday Morning Morons. We have had up to 22 people come in for this morning breakfast to meet and greet. This is just to have fun and talk about anything. We are the members of the unofficial 3M Group having our weekly update meeting. Lots of fun always. But back to friends helping dismantle these engines, kind of won’t happen. One friend just retired and has 5 general aviation aircraft to perform annual inspections on over the next few months. He is tied up until November. The other friend had knee surgery and still trying to get around. He is working to get just good enough to get other knee done. So it will also be months away from help from him. It is up to Donna and I to tear them down, if we want the ugly engines gone.
Dennis would you buy these for a group price of $300? Just a tongue in cheek humorous question. Probably worth it, if the parts being identified are actually saved.
Ken: My plans are to have truck hooked up to the trailer, then slide each engine down the trailer ramp into a bed liner on the ground. I will then pull the engine around into a specific position in the bed liner. Both will be covered with another bed liner. I plan to dismantle the 140 first since about 30% of the engine is gone. Ps: I have about 25 bed liners still in a stack for personal use.
66vairguy, I saw those parts around the 12 plate oil cooler. I knew they need cleaning before declaring them good parts. The rear housing hopefully will be salvageable. The heater hose on 66s was on the left side, but I will check. If the hose adapter is good, it will be saved. Here is the Part Catalogue info on the brace. Nothing specific for a turbo engine.

Re: New Dismantling Project
It's tough getting them apart if they won't turn. I've sliced cylinders open with a cut-off wheel and chisel. Cutting through the rods might be another way to go.
I can work for free but paying an associate was often upside down folly when it comes to harvesting reward.
But you know all this so I'm preaching to the choir.
It can be sort of fun but then I have a weird definition of fun.

Re: New Dismantling Project
I try to protect the rods. So the pistons and cylinders are sacrificed. Even the block is sacrificed to get to the good parts. Heat, air impact sockets and chisels are all employed to dismantle engines that have been abused by previous owners (left to the elements).
I have used scissor jacks to move cylinders off an engine. One the Hurricane 140 engine, I had to use a engine hoist to lift an engine by a cylinder, then applied heat to the cylinder and smacking it with a 10 lb hammer to get that one cylinder off. Sometimes, that is what it takes. A large cardboard box fill with more cardboard was the drop zone about 3 inches below the raised cylinder.

Besides the 4" heater hose extension on the RH side that is usally missing. The part that the extension attaches to is usally still there. Since the hole is "D" shaped it is a turbo only part, if it isn't rusted away.

Re: New Dismantling Project
Rex: I will address the part you are talking about on the turbo in the next post. This post is smaller and about the 140 engine, or the remains of one.
140 RT engine remains Photos:
LH head assembly: Not much here. Carb studs, maybe a thermister, but I doubt someone left it behind. No one wants the washers under the valve springs , or any of the lower stud related parts. Scrap steel and aluminum is all I see.
Pressure plate and flywheel for someone who wants to have them bead blasted & resurfaced. If no one steps up, I have scrap steel and aluminum (bell housing).
Maybe a crankshaft. Rods are too far gone with rust (JMO). Scrap steel and aluminum seen here.
Scrap steel and aluminum seen here.
This may the one to cut the rods and case to extract the crankshaft. Scrap the rest as steel.

Rex: you get to see where your post fits into the photos now. It is only could possibly be found on the 4th photo. But you are right, it is gone due to an attack by the environmental atmosphere of southwest Georgia.
Turbo 180 Engine Remains Photos
Flex plate and PG bell housing on engine. Interesting Parts to scrap. Turbo and carb parts to save for someone to call about. Fan shroud scrap. Turbo pipe & mount scrap. Intake pipe scrap. Fuel lines scrap, but good chrome save. Linkage save for someone to call about.
Left air outlet scrap. Is there a thermister at end of wire? I have to be careful in area until I know for sure.
LH head. Looks like a scrap item.
Same comments as photo 183829. Plus the Turbo only RH heat air metal duct is rusted off gone, along with most of the cover panel it attaches to.
Same comments as photo 183829.
Fuel pump and idler pulley scrap. Dispose of plug wires.
12 plate cooler- save and its cover plate.
RH head. Looks like a scrap item.
Harmonic balancer, needs rebuild. Turbo rear housing with special timing plate. Turbo distributor with a retard unit I think. EM RH cooling box - scrap..
Alternator fan, destroyed. Hopefully front housing is OK. A good view of a Generator Adaptor on a 1966 Turbo Engine with an alternator mounted on it.
Alternator/Oil Fill Adapter is really a Generator/Oil Fill adaptor. Scrap Item. Have to pull steel items off.
Now you all now what I think I have, which is possibly a nitrided crankshaft in this engine.

It looks like that engine was hooked to a PG in an early. The top shrould has been switched.
