Should I Buy It??

Post by BajaBill »

!965 Corsa 140 owner said his wifes grandparents bought it new here in town and parked it in 1972. It has been moved a couple of times over the years and sat outside some but is inside now. lots of surface rust and maybe some rot around the F & R glass see pics. Sounds like he has no paperwork to verify his one family claim. The would need lots of work.
The floors are solid and there is no other signs of rot anywhere including rockers and trunk but lots of surface everywhere.
Look at my pics and let me know what you think. I'm including pic of body tag and help with that would be great also.

My question would be - how much work are you going to do your self? How long do you want the project to take.

Jeremy,
I can do most of it except upholstery and paint. I can do all of the paint prep and get a friend to spray it but I may have to get some of the rust repair/metal replacement done by pro's. I can do brakes, suspension, engine, trans if needed and all disasssembly and reassembly myself plus all cleaning. I have all my tools from when I owned a local repair shop and some new equipipment as well. I'm thinking it will take at least 1 year depending on my energy level. My plan would bwe to get it running and drive a little and then a complete demate and start and start on the body first followed by suspension, brakes and then engine etc.

It sounds like you have the experience and drive to complete the project Bill. I personally get great satisfaction from taking something that others call junk and bringing it back to life. Thus the reason I spend hours and hours working on a pinball machine or jukebox.

Good luck - go for it!

I think it's got a lot of the "right stuff" even tho' it has the dreaded windshield rot......doesn't seem too bad. Black plates too. What's been sorta sad lately is how you KNOW you can buy a mint one for waaay less than it'll cost to restore that, AND start enjoying it immediately. That's the dilemma I find with a lot of my projects, however.....I do enjoy "bringing 'em back", so....it's that satisfaction that drives me.

Get it!

I would start at $750...but they might get offended.

I like the fact that it is a Van Nuys plant car.

A wise person once told me " A good deal is what you percieve of it" Seems like you could get it for 1000.00. I wouldn't pay more than that if it was me. You can buy a nice driver for 3K to 4K right now. But we car guys do enjoy the restore aspect. Any Corvair is worth restoring, this one is no exception......For the right price.
