Von essers wheels

Post by 61SuperMonza »

I have been trying to find info on the wheels that my father had on his 64 spyder convertible. The wheels were purchased at von essers in Chicago. They had magnesium centers with chrome plated steel rims that were reversed. Look a bit like 4 spoke torque thrust wheels. Dad can't remember the maker. Any thoughts would be great. Here is a picture of the car with the wheels.

I can't make out what the wheels look like in the picture but Crager S/S wheels were cast aluminum centers with steel rims.

Thanks for the input on this, but I know they aren't the Cragar SS wheels. The spyder was purchased in Chicago when my dad was celebrating his 21 birthday in 64. His first stop was Von essers to pick up some accessories and wheels. I don't think the Cragars were available in 64. Dad was looking for Hands wheels but couldn't find any and he really liked these wheels so he went for it. He drove the new spyder from Chicago to Fairbanks,AK in 6 days. When he got through the AK boarder he stopped in Tok,Ak and mounted the wheels so he could roll into Fairbanks with his custom wheels. Talk about a good way to break in a new motor. Dad laughs about how difficult it was to stay out of it for the first 500 miles.
I will try and locate some better pictures of the wheels. I have never seen another set like them.

I thought I would give an update on my search for the wheels. I finally got some info on the HAMB.
The wheels are made by Hollywood Wheel Manufacturers. They are called the Belarina. I'm so glad to know what they are. The kicker is they are quite rare in the 4 spoke design.
Now the search begins!?!?

Cool that you tracked down the manufacturer/style! Who knows, you may find them cheap somewhere.

Actually it's Barela....I googled it and hit "images". Beautiful wheel....

Thanks guys, I see I had miss typed the name of the wheels. It's time to start the search. I'm not really sure what a serious will be worth. I guess it's what I'm willing to pay. My first inquiry will be HKA wheels in Washington. I'm told they can shed more light on the wheels.
Hope I can find a set some day. They would look bitchin on the car with a thin WW tire.

I emailed HKA wheels and was told that in 39yrs in the wheel business he had never seen a set of 4 spoke barelas and only 2 sets of the 5 spoke. I guess they are very rare. That's cool but I don't think it's going to be easy to find a set.

Hi Norm,
I guess if you get desperate, you could redrill your axles and drums, and mount the five spokes?

I saw those wheels and they appear to be in very good condition but I really like the look of the 4 spoke wheel. I had a Photoshop done with the 5 spokes and they look good but the 4 spokes just seem right.
