Where to buy an engine?

Post by perfectreign »

So with our new '65 Corsa project ready to be restored. We realized the best bet is to drop the engine and replace it with something more suitable. The PO had a 61 engine with something causing bad to no compression. Jeff at California Corvairs suggested we not even bother with this engine.

The engine code is 3786588, which translates to a 61 model with 80hp.

So here's my question: I've been looking for a 110 or 140 hp engine with zero luck. Craigslist, eBay, and OfferUp have shown sparse possibilities. Where would be the best source for me to find one? I'm even thinking of getting a running model with rust and pulling the engine.

Unfortunately most of the finds are engines put into sandrails or dune buggies.

Ideas?

Often the best way is to find a car to purchase with an engine in it that is suitable. If the car is a late model (in your case) it would also have perhaps some usable spare parts as well. 65 and 66 models would have the most transferability of misc. parts for your 65. There are quite a few differences between a 65 and 66 so a 65 would be ideal (engines are basically transferable between all Corvairs, I am referencing usability of other parts)

You can get a rebuilt long block for $5k from The Corvair Ranch http://www.corvairranch.com.

You might also be able to get a complete stock (un-rebuilt) engine from them for less.

Where are you located. A local club member may have a 140 they will part with. Or someone close could build you one. You may also get the correct block date build for your 65 Corsa.

Jeff out at Calif. Covair could build up an engine - but I suspect it would run at least $5,000.00 or more. Pretty typical now IF done correctly with a warranty. Next the transaxle will need a rebuild and that could run anywhere from $1,000.00 up (usually more). Then you buy new wiring harnesses, do the interior, paint, chrome, etc..

This is why I tell folks too buy the BEST old car they can. I've seen some nice Corvairs with good engines/transaxle, new interior, new paint sell for less then what the owners put into them. Literally a bargain for the new owner.
