Rescuing a wagon in Nevada

At some point in the distant past someone dragged this 62 Monza wagon 50' up a 45 degree dirt/gravel/pine needles slope to a flat spot, and now I like to rescue it without damage. It looks like a cable was attached to the rear motor mount last time, and somehow pulled up the hill. Is that the safest spot? If not, what is? Another option, which I'm not yet sure is affordable, is for a crane to lift it out, but I'm not sure how to do that without damaging the body. The crane guy suggested putting plywood along side the body to spread the load of the lifting straps, but I'm afraid the sheet metal would crush. Another idea is to put 2 6x6s or I beams across, and lift from their end points. I'm worried that parts of the body would still be crushed from below. Any advice?

When pulling from the front or rear with straps and winches and such it is best to hook onto the suspension crossmember in the front and the lower rear suspension arms in the rear, There are subframe slots for T hooks that tow guys use as well and they can also be used but may (particularly if there is any rust in the area) not be as strong as necessary. First order of business would be to free up any stuck brakes and get wheels and tires on it so it can roll and perhaps not drag .

Thanks. The lug nuts, wheels, and brakes were easier than I expected. Guess it's the dry climate here, nothing like home in PA. Hard to believe this hasn't been registered since 1970. New tires are on order.

Thanks Ford! My wife wants a wagon something fierce but they've got too many doors for my taste. I keep telling her to get a Type 3 Squareback instead and maybe put a 'vair engine in it. =D

I always thought it ironic that the Squareback succeeded right after the Corvair wagon failed, with essentially the same design.

I like the Squareback, but prefer the more unique styling of the Corvair. I used to be a VW mechanic, so a lot of VWs in my past.

There are twenty-eight pictures of the cleanest Lakewood Station Wagon I have ever seen. The underside is almost more beautiful than the topside! This car was for sale in Florida several years ago. If I had had the money...

Our next two Corvair purchases will be a Spyder convertible and a Lakewood or 62 wagon. I really wish there were a two door version available but Missy doesn't mind the four door wagon look at all.

I seem to remember that from the 1970s magazines.

This interesting car was a concept car built by PMD (Pontiac Motor Division). It was labeled as the "K" car for Kammback. The car never saw production but two models were specially constructed in Italy for GM`s Design vice president David Holls.

The concept was to put out a Firebird station wagon that would provide a performance car to the public. A silver wagon and gold wagon were built (total of two) and were 100% factory original as they appear in these pictures. The gold wagon has been destroyed reportedly due to internal company issues.
