Heater/Defrost "J-Tube" Replacement

Post by draw82 »

I received a 64' Corvair Monza Coupe from a family friend. He has had it for years, but is to old to work on it. While removing the withered heat and defrost hoses, I found that the "J-tube" connecting the front floor vents to the defrost hoses to be rusted out beyond repair. (See pics below) my questions follow:
1. Are there replacements?
2. If so, how would I remove the old ones?
3. If not, could I possibly run defrost hose and find a way to keep the hose from backing off the floor vent?

Any and all comments are welcome. Thank you for your time.
I do not know why the pics are rotated. Sorry!

V/r,
Jesse

  I can't really tell what can be done to replace the ducting on your Corvair from the picture. Assuming that you might have to fabricate something, the aircraft industry has a range of flexible ducting, aluminum flanges, bulkhead ducts, 90 degree tubing, etc. that just might provide some components for fabricating an air passage for replacing your aging defroster connections. The 1960s GM way does not need to be the only way to get the job done. Perhaps these website pages will inspire a method for fabricating a replacement. 2" ducting shown here...

Or possibly the Corvair Ranch in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania might have some suggestions...

Wow, that's a new one to me, but beautiful car! I love that color combo.

Ralph Nader would love that first picture though, until he realized the garage was also upside-down! :rolling:

Mine looked like that, but they were covered in mouse shit and bedding. I cleaned them up, rusty metal primered them and now use a gas heater. Like others said, I would look into using something like dryer duct the whole way if you don’t want to fab new tubes.
