1969 corvair vehicle sequence numbers

Post by bobg1951chevy »

As you may .... or may not know, my 6 month search for a Corvair has ended.
My 1969 500 Coupe will be transported to me in the 2nd week of July.
Being that 6,000 Corvairs were assembled for the 1969 model run, are the last digits of my V.I.N. related to the 6,000 total Corvairs produced or are the last digits related to the 2,762 Corvair 500's produced ?

In other words, my last digits being 2,000, does that indicate my car was # 2,000 out of 6,000 or is it #2,000 out of 2,762 ?

Thanks,
Bob.

Your car was #2000 out of 6000. My original 69 Monza coupe was #4485 out of 6000. My current 69 Monza convertible is 3812.

The sequence # is part of the puzzle. Fisher was stock piling bodies. If you look at the Finger tip facts book you will see the bodies on the last 10 cars were actually older than the ones that preceded them. Last 10 has dates of 04D where the ones that preceded them were 05A. The bodies numbers are also all over the place too.

Build quality was terrible on the 69's especially the later ones. Many had damaged body panels, missing parts or assembly procedures. My convertible has a big kink at the bottom of the left side door hinge pillar like someone dropped it before it was welded on. Dave Keillor who has a highly option coupe that he bought new had over 15 defects including a few on the body where the panels were welded on incorrectly. I have seen 69's rust in places and way that no other year will rust.
