Crazy extra oil cooler setup
Today I found the craziest attempt at additional oil cooling I have ever seen. Systems drew oil from center bottom of oil pan via 2 electric pumps and many feet of rubber hose through 4 12"x12" oil coolers mounted under the floor and returned the oil to the valve covers via tubes welded into the cover with a few holes "squirting" oil toward the rockers. See photos for a good laugh.

One good speed bump and it would become another "Valdez" fiasco.

Is any of that even rated for oil use? Lol those look like fuel pumps and heater hose.

Re: Crazy extra oil cooler setup
Probably not , best I could determine it was fuel pumps and fuel or trans fluid rated hoses. It was leaking all over but then there was quite a few connections.

lol I wonder why this seemed necessary. Also I wonder is it was effective at all. I drive my 80hp vair with partially bad engine tin seals in 90 degree weather and it stays within operating temperature.

Re: Crazy extra oil cooler setup
My thoughts exactly. With the coolers all mounted flat under the floor pans and therefore not really getting any airflow through them I doubt this system did much except increase the oil capacity, make leaks, and make it impossible to do a complete oil change. This is why it all went in the trash, but you know the guy who did this was likely a rocket scientist:)lostboy wrote: ↑Fri Mar 24, 2017 10:27 amterribleted wrote:Probably not , best I could determine it was fuel pumps and fuel or trans fluid rated hoses. A rocket scientist? Only if he worked for Morton-Thiokol (the infamous space shuttle solid fuel booster builder...)
