Update on my transmission shifting problems....

Post by tommy44432 »

*Update because I'm too lazy to search for original post*

After transmission rebuild by a very reputable transmission specialist in my area, I adjusted the linkage to my PG as outlined in the service manual.
Or so I thought. I could not get the transmission to shift from low to drive properly. It only shifted at high speed....almost 50 mph. I adjusted the linkage half a dozen times and it always came out the same. Frustration was setting in. One night I woke up at 4AM and my mind went right to my problem. *sigh* Then I had an epiphany!! In the service manual a reference was made to "lengthening the throttle pivot five full turns". But it doesn't say in or out....just lengthen. I interpreted that to mean turning the pivot towards the front of the car...not the back. I'll try turning the pivot to the rear of the car five full turns! In the words of Mythbuster's Adam Savage.... "well there's your problem". I jumped out of bed and got dressed. The wife, whom I just woke up, asked what I was doing so I told her. "I suppose you're going to go for another test drive", shook her head, rolled over and said "be quiet about it". Out to the garage I went, turned the pivot towards the rear of the car TEN full turns since I was 5 turns the other way I added five turns. Took the car for a drive and low and behold the transmission shifted perfectly!

Now comes my excuse. I was so fixated on whether or not the transmission guy had rebuilt the PG properly that I was assuming he had effed up. Under any other circumstance I would have thought "well, dummy, that didn't work turn it five turns the other way". You know what they say about "assume". Only it seems I was the ass this time! ::-): 500 miles since the rebuild...still shifts great! lol

Glad it worked out. We all get fixated and miss the obvious sometimes, lol.
