Dewalt 20volt Medium Duty Impact Tool Review

Post by Phil Dally »

The short review is GREAT TOOL!!!

Smooth, quiet, and not too heavy.

Belt clip is definitely not needed.

There is also heavy duty version.

This one is perfect for Corvairs.

Phil:

I bought Dewalt Max XR DCF891B (bare tool) in June last year.ago. I didn't post it for some odd reason. I did post it on the Team Camaro website. I bought to take lug nuts off my truck and trailers.

Trivia. These are 18 volt batteries. But, to make them different in buyer's eyes than the 18 volt pod style battery tools they sold for years, they just call them 20 volt! You can get an adapter to use the new batteries in the 18 volt pod tools, which I have several drills/impacts/radio (not a great radio, though  ) still going strong.

Of course I still have 12 volt Makitas (about everything they made in the line 20 +years ago) and some 18 volt Hitachi (now Metabo) drills and impacts.

And still using the small Snap-On impacts I bought from Ken Hand! I put new cells in the battery holders. :tu:

I never owned Dewalt battery powered tools until last year when 8 pieces of 20 volt with batteries & 3 chargers were picked up from a house clean out I did. I also got a few 18 volt pieces with a battery adapter.

How I came about to getting the big Dewalt impact wrench is imporant for any looking for anyone looking for impact wrench and having multiple battery styles to work with.

The torque the tool puts out is a key feature and also how much torque you need for the tool to have. I was looking for a good battery powered impact wrench made by Craftsman early last year for truck lug nut removal to work along side my 12 vdc jack. But the ads for Craftsman V20 tools never provided the torque power of their impact wrench. Without that one detail, I had to forgo buying a tool that matched my Craftsman V20 Set. I then looked at the Dewalt 1/2" impact wrenches. The 891b, was the one that met my needs. I also already had a battery that would fit it. I bought it for $185, which was a bargain at the time for a new item. It has come into use several times, since it was bought to include breaking nuts loose on rusted Vair parts, I have not used setting 3 yet to break loose any nut or bolt.

The Dewalt 891b had a failure of the lock ring that holds the sockets on. Dewalt does not sell them. The want you to replace the socket adapter for $90. I found a package of 10 rings on Amazon for about $12. I just had to make sure to get the right size. Now I put a little grease on the ring to help the sockets on.

My 20 volt Dewalt journey started when my last 9.6 volt Makita battery died.

You can still get the 9.6'ers but it seemed more prudent to get a new system.

I would give all the Makita tools to anyone who is willing to pay the shipping!!

Dewalt was the first battery tools I bought in the '90s.
Then they changed the battery.
Then they changed the battery again and that was in the '90s.
More recently, not sure when they changed from 18v to 20v.

I went to MILWAUKEE 18V , 20 + years back and the only thing that has changed is the Amp Hr rating and the price.
