Fastener for Wire Harness Cover - 65 Monza Steering Column
Fastener for Wire Harness Cover - 65 Monza Steering Column
Hi All -
I have a random question for the group. On my 1965 Monza, there is a plastic cover that holds the horn and turn signal wiring harness to the underside of the steering column. On the end closest to the dashboard is a provision for a fastener to secure the plastic cover to the column. Does anyone know what type of fastener goes here? The hole itself seems to be pretty shallow. I've attached a photo for reference.
Thank you,
Matt

Wow, nobody replied. I've never seen a fastener for the "hole" in the cover.
I recall one end of the plastic cover slipped into a cutout in the bell shaped turn signal lever. The other end is held held up by the steering column bracket.

Here ya go,
Unfortunately, assembly instructions do not specify what type of fastener is used. I would guess a #10 or possibly a 1/4" flanged sheet metal screw could suffice. Personally, I've seen plenty of steering columns using a type of black masking tape instead of a screw.

Well ---- I went to look for the fastener "hole" and both my cars have it, but NO fastener. May have been one of those deals the assembly line decided not to do, or the fastener got lost long ago since most turn signal switches have been replaced (at least once).
I've helped a few change the 65-66 switch and never found the plastic holder anchored to the mast tube. Just held up by steering column bracket. Just me.

Here ya go,
An unorthodox method (possibly factory) of keeping column wiring in place. My '66 Monza has been in my possession just over 42 years, never had a problem with switch and/or wiring. All original as far as I'm concerned.

Thank you all for the feedback. I assumed that there had to be a fastener that went in that hole, but I guess not. I am fine with using tape!

I just checked my original 65 and tape is holding the harness as shown previously, looks like the factory method for sure, good day
