Still Another Way to Remove Pushrod Tubes
Hello,
I just changed out the seals on my pushrod tubes and was dreading trying to get the tubes out without wrecking them. I read all the ways here (all good) and remembered from my tranny days a pair of pliers for inside snap rings. They have a really deep pivot point. Inserted about two inches and gently gripped you can rotate the tube to break it loose and pull it right out.
They are Craftsman P 4735 snap ring pliers. I'm sure all the companies have something like that, being as Craftsman are getting hard to find.

Good suggestions that work is what we are all about.
Here are other tools known to work.

Re: Still Another Way to Remove Pushrod Tubes
It was a little extra work, but I used a small hose clamp, tightened it around the tubes, then a pair of channel locks. The clamp not only helped protect the tubes, but it gave a point of leverage.

Re: Still Another Way to Remove Pushrod Tubes
For the low cost of either of the two pliers, it might be time to get a set to save time. Then for the difficult ones, go back to the clamp method. With Viton seals, there should be no more difficult ones with baked on seals.
4 years & 15k on my push rod tube seals, when I had to pull them in 2021 for the camshaft change. Only the Clarks tool was used to push the tubes out. No hammer. Line up tool and used my hand force to push them out.

It is the 25+ year old Neoprene (Buna-N) o-rings that fight you. My go to is a 8 oz. ball peen hammer on a homemade version of the Clark's tool (w/o swivel). You can see how many tubes I hammered out with hard seals on them.
Tubes that already have Vitons on them you can almost remove with your hands.

Sometimes if I have one that is real tight I just beat on the side of it until it comes loose. I then pull it out and throw it away. I have so many good used ones that I don't waist time with one that is stuck.

THANK you, Al. I found this thing while going through the tool chests months ago. I've seen a lot of tools, and still didn't know what to make of this. Thought it would end up being something really weird...like a horse speculum. Can finally put this one to bed.
Mwahaha.

Re: Still Another Way to Remove Pushrod Tubes
All of those special tools!!!! Yeah, I have a couple, but the real trick is to use a 9/16" socket on the head side of the tube and then tap the socket on the end of the tube, using a hammer of course. Make sure you tap on the tube and not the thin sheet metal upper ring. After that you can almost pull them out with your fingers, especially the hard old rubber o-rings. After doing that I don't generally even have to use a hammer to get the tubes out with my special tools, I just tug on the tool.
