Staking valve seats?

Post by 4carbcorvair »

I lapped the new valves for my new to me 140 heads. VERY good untouched originals by the way. :) Valve guides are great, no excessive play. Seats are good. I picked up Clarks seat staking tool. Any tips or suggestions before I start hammering away?

If the heads were machined correctly in the first place, there's no need for any black magic. IMO if you're staking because you're worried about dropping, just have new seats put in.

Untouched originals, never machined. Don't have the $$ to ship them out and have seats replaced, already have the tool. They look like VERY low mileage heads. :)

So run them like they are, staking them is a bandaid.

Thanks. Think I'll leave them alone. :)

My personal feeling on this issue is if you don't have enough money to do it right, don't do it at all. Just make sure you don't overheat it, I doubt the seats will fall out.

Ronnie -- I always wondered if staking might cause hot spots and preignition :dontknow:

If you wanna stake them you can do it with a small punch and a hammer. Check out Phil Dally's landspeed car for some pics.

I did it years ago on my old blue 67 after I dropped one seat . I had the seat replaced and then staked them all. Never had another fall out after that.

Thanks Kevin. I was wondering the same as the aluminum sticks up a bit after doing this.

I was also reading about drilling next/into the side of the seat, tapping, insert machine screw, grind head off. This supposedly holds the seats in as well and may sound like a better idea than staking?
