Blower bearing hub removal.

Post by TonyL »

I just got my head and blower bearing back from LeVair, (those guys are awesome. seriously.)

I've separated the hub and bearing from the housing, which was cake with the help of a little heat, but now im confused.
I've got the old, bad bearing with a hub still attached.

Im sure i can just press the old bearing out, but im worried about pressing the new one in. Everything I've read says not to put pressure on the bearing race, but on the shaft.

But it looks like i'll need to to get the hub off? or am i crazy?

Tony - not sure what you mean by seperating the hub and bearing.

Usually you remove as a unit from the top cover and then replace as a unit.

The important part is setting the installed height of the bearing. If you heat the top cover the new assembly will almost drop into place.

The inside of the top cover is braced so the unit can be pressed in but the cover must be removed from engine.

Clark's sells a unit with a replaceable bearing . Is that what you bought ?

I bought just the bearing. I'd assumed it came with the hub pressed on. No worries though. I'll get it done. =)

Right on Tony, yeah, I bought the whole top pan with a new blower bearing & top hat. That's when I found out the PO who built this motor used random parts. '64 small bearing & pulley. gggg

Don't forget when a new greased bearing is put on it is going to spit (or splash) grease EVERYWHERE on the engine for the first 50+ miles. =)

I have replace them all the time. Just heat up the part the fan attaches to and press back together its really not that tight of a fit. you might even be able to cold press it. If you are not using a hammer to beat it in you shouldnt hurt the bearing.

It went very well. Its all back together and running. I've driven it back and forth to work over the last few days. Honestly, It's never run better than right now. Not hearing that bearing howl and growl gives the engine a whole new song to get used to. Now for the fun parts. The new two headers into one muffler exhaust, and the quarter panel repair.

Sounds good Tony. Hey, Jim still wants to get some pics of you, Danny, me & him all together. Maybe at the Spring Fling we can find a good place to park the cars and snap a few shots. lol.
